Soldiers Capture 'High-value' Terror Suspect in Baghdad
American Forces Press Service

BAGHDAD, July 14, 2009 - U.S. forces apprehended a wanted man suspected of being the leader of a bomb-making cell during a July 12 civil affairs mission west of Baghdad.

Civil affairs officers from C Troop, 150th Armored Reconnaissance Squadron, went to the man's house July 12 to pay for damages to his front door caused during a previous attempt to capture the known criminal.

The man attempted to flee through a field behind his house, but surrendered to pursuing C Troop soldiers, who transferred him to Iraqi army custody.

The suspected criminal admitted he is a member of an insurgency group. Iraqi soldiers had been searching for him for nearly a week.

"He was listed ninth on the [battalion's] Iraqi high-value target list, and there was a terrorist warrant for his arrest here in Iraq," said Army 2nd Lt. Jason Hickman, a C Troop platoon leader.

The man also is one of the 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team's "most wanted." The 30th HBCT is the parent brigade to the 150th Armored Reconnaissance Squadron, and is made up of National Guardsmen from North Carolina, West Virginia and Colorado. C Troop is based in Glen Jean, W.Va.

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires. Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute. Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is. The UAVs we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now. Of course, now I have to call them UAS's, because someone got a Legion of Merit for the name change.Anyway, I call the post H&I Fires because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to that particular topic. Another term of art that might be appropriate is Free Fire Zone.

...the expectation that the rewards of service on the big stage of national government come with 18-hour, on-call days.

Oh, get over it. Some people have 18-hour *duty* days and are on-call the other six.

Whiners is right.

"Yo, Habeeb? Saber Six, here, salaam aleikum 'n' all, buddy. Look, we're sorry about the door thing last week, but, hey, we're gonna have a Financial Reimbursement Team in the neighborhood on the 12th. If you can meet them at your place with an itemized bill for the repair costs, they'll cut you a check on the spot, okay? Whazzat? Right after lunch, say, one-ish? Yeah, that'll work -- see ya then, buddy. Toodles."

What's the thinking on the soldier challenging his deployment because Teh One isn't a citizen?  Is he a patriot driving home the birth certificate point, or simply using a handy excuse?  Or something else entirely?
I'm still not happy with the way the Watada case was dribbled away and eventually dismissed, but I am not ready to write this guy off as a coward without other data points.

I put up a post on the subject, Barb.

Without meaning to minimize anyone elses contributions, if there's one group that's really made a difference in Iraq it's the CA guys & gals.  They don't get anywhere near as much love as they deserve.

He could be trying to force the issue.

Or he could be ducking deployment -- notice he's also filed for CO status.

Buuuut, if I were a conspiracy theorist, I'd be wondering why Obama's Birth Certificate -- which is a different document from a Certificate of Live Birth, because a BC records *place* of birth, rather than just the *fact* of birth -- is on such close hold, since merely producing it would shut everybody up.

My guess is that the court will find a suitably squishy reason to decide against the plaintiff.

Such as, Obama *must* be a natural-born US citizen because he's POTUS, and, in order to be POTUS, one *must* be a natural-born citizen of the US.

Q.E.D. Nihil obistat. Imprimatur. Per omnia, omnia, saeculorum, Amen. Omni. omni, VOR.

Pogue - I wasn't complainin', just bemusedly observin'.

I like Bill's take.

I don't understand why he doesn't just produce the birth certificate.  I assume he has a U.S. passport so he has to have one.

I don't know anything about the folks at FactCheck.Org, but they have pictures of a physical cert at their site.  A cert which one or more of them had touched and photographed directly.  I don't know why they (Teh One / Dems / Obama advisors) continue to play coy on the topic.  If the cert was faked (and it does not appear so), then why not address the whole thing head on.  Dumb - or crazy like a fox?  Look at how much time people have spent speculating and blathering.

[TINS]

My Uncle Yves, was born on February 1941 in Lisbon Portugal.  Do the math, 9-Months after the Blitzkrieg that swept Belgium and France.  When The War broke-out my grandparents along with my grandmother's family all packed-up in Brussels and joined the mass of humanity that fled the Boche.  (The stories that Pepe and Meme had about that period).  Amongst the drama and carnage swirling around them, Yves was conceived, as the story goes in a quiet night by a French Fishing Village.

Once the armistice was declared, they all trudged back to Brussels, as the Krauts decreed that anyone not in back in their property of origin will be liable to automatic confiscation by the Occupation Authorities.  Once the family settled back down in Belgium, Grampa, Grandma, and Bun-in-the-Oven departed down to neutral Portugal, so as to eventually make it to Grandpa's land of his birth.  In Portugal they immediately applied for entry visa for my Grandma, but amongst the waves of humanity clamoring to enter The U.S. they had to wait close to a year for her visa to be approved.

In February Yves was born, and immediately was registered with the U.S. Consulate in Lisbon. Three months latter, Meme's visa came through.  They immediately hopped on a cargo ship headed to New York (their ship was subsequently torpedoed in the following voyage), and from there in a steamer down to The Island, only months to spare before Pearl Harbor.

Flash forward to the mid 80's.  Yves had to file some official paperwork with the courts back home, and that's when the nasty surprise sprung on his face.  After four decades of having a U.S. Passport, and over two decades of voting in every election, he is informed that a certain filing with the U.S. Consulate in Lisbon was not properly executed, thus he was NOT a U.S. Citizen, and remained a Portuguese Citizen afterall.

Hire a lawyer, contact the Portuguese Consulate in San Juan, Contact the U.S. State Department, shuffle paper to and fro, and six months latter problem solved.  He became a U.S. Citizen "Officially", this time.

[/TINS]

What I'm getting at: having a U.S. Passport is not always a perfect proof of U.S. Citizenship.

Also a TINS.  I have a Certificate of Live Birth, in my case a State Department document reporting the birth of a child to Americans overseas, executed by the US Embassy in Bonn.

I have a Geburtsurkunde, or birth certificate, from the Stadtsamt Wurzburg.

I have a Naturalization Certificate.

I have a passport.

Bill's point still holds - the Certification of Live Birth isn't a birth certificate.

I don't have an official opinion one way or another about the Obama issue, but I wonder why he can't produce a birth certificate (and my naturalization certificate) like I have to do every time I update my security clearance.  That would clear things up immediately and make the Birther crowd look like fools.

I knew you'd pick up the Bastille Day -- my wife thanks you.

...but they have pictures of a physical cert at their site.

Which is evidently one of two *different* Birth Certs to surface -- the first of which appeared on the DNC's site, then yanked after someone pointed out the format was *odd* for that time period.

Which has led to speculation that someone with more zeal than sense created one to be helpful.

There's evidence that the one presently on display is the product of someone with more sense, but lousier 'Shopping skills.

Note that only a few True Believers have been permitted to view and photograph Teh Won's BC.

Heh. Right now, there's more physical evidence for the existence of a colony of yetis in the Himalayas than there is for the existence of Obama's Hawaiian Birth Certificate in Honolulu.

I just keep thinking Trojan Horse.

Why, oh, why, do I feel an 'Ernestine the Operator' moment coming on?  Could it be....BILLT?

hehe. That was brilliant.

OMYGAIA.  The White House Staffers have sooo much to take care of and they are soooo exhausted in dealing with the worst recession since (correction mine) President Carter.  Two wars, affordable health care and bailing out the auto industry.

It is past Big Brother's naptime.  They are getting cranky.

Did it ever occur to *any* of them that they would be able to get more sleep, and have a normal life if they just minded their own business and not the nation's?  IOW, getting out of the way of the free market?

*tsk*

Cricket, you goose -- they're *Libs*. So, y'know, they're totally, like, spay-shull.

Their parent(s) never taught them to mind their own business -- just that the world was full of victims that only *they* could save.

Ummmmmmm -- after they obtained sufficient access to everybody *else's* money, naturally...

Otay, here is a conundrum:  Which came first, the crisis or the tax?

I'm a goose?  Does this mean I can fly the lead in the next migration?

Honestly.  My son, poor lad, had to have the same paperwork as John, with the exception of the naturalization cert which is not required anymore.  I still have his paperwork, along with the Border Baby Certificate, which was a just-fer-fun but also a part of history...

We have double and triple checked the availability and authenticity of the CLUs paperwork.

Which came first, the crisis or the tax?

Your accounting tome won't give you that information?

Waterboard it.

I'll swear you briefed San Fran Nan beforehand...

The Accounting Tome is not political.  It strives to be in conformity with all known Rules of Manipulation, hence the conundrum.  Personally, I say the crisis, and then the current circular logic on which egregious taxation by our representation is based.  I have been eying San Fran Nan for an enhanced interview.
