Interestingly enough, our Naviguesser on the P-3 had a small sextant he had to use at least once each mission for quals. We had a small bubble in the overhead for him to use when shooting the sun OR a star fix.

Yeah, that really dark filter was for counting sunspots so you could take the electromagnetic charge of the atmosphere into account if you wanted really, *really* accurate data for registration.
