I thought it was the Onion...

Because it reads like a juicy parody.

NEW YORK (Online) - Former prime minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto was assassinated on the orders of the special death squad formed by former US vice-president Dick Cheney, which had already killed the Lebanese Prime Minister Rafique Al Hariri and the army chief of that country.
The squad was headed by General Stanley McChrystal, the newly-appointed commander of US army in Afghanistan. It was disclosed by reputed US journalist Seymour Hersh while talking to an Arab TV in an interview.

Turns out it was The Nation.  In Pakistan, mind you.  Not this one.

Welcome to the world of Information Operations.

Update: Sy Hersh backpeddles from this so fast his shoes are burning.  According to Cliff May at National Review's The Corner blog, here's a transcript of things Hersh did say

Accepting what he says at face value, I'll simply reiterate:  Welcome to the world of Information Operations.

Updated Update: Greyhawk really does a slap-down on Hersh, et.al.   Why, it's enough to make you want to join the Warrior Legacy Foundation

So, when is Seymour Hirsch going to repeat David Icke's claim that Cheney is also a shape-shifting reptile alien member of the Babylonian Brotherhood / Illuminati / Freemasons / Bilderburgers / Trilateral Commission / Council on Foreign Relations / etc etc etc  conspiracy?

I must be one, too, because people like Hirsch make MY skin crawl.

“This is another example of blogs going bonkers with misleading and fabricated stories and professional journalists repeating such rumours without doing their job – and that is to verify such rumours.” staff report.

So, Hersh states something in an interview on an Arab TV show, it's picked up in the Asian newspapers, and -- somehow -- it's all the fault of the bloggers. Riiiiight, Seymour...

From The Nation: It was disclosed by reputed US journalist Seymour Hersh while talking to an Arab TV in an interview.

The Nation is an English Language newspaper. When the editor called Hersh a "reputed US journalist," he tagged him precisely.

What? People still actually listen to that grubby little rumor-monger?

Could someone, please, explain to me how this is not a good example of giving direct aid to an enemy during a time of war by attempting to provide motivation to join the fight against the US?

Would it be reasonable to consider this treason.  Of course the problem is a) They'd never be brought to account b) Such a Trial would probably make things worse.

BTW Cheney eats mice too. And budgerigars.  And fried mars bars.  That proves everything.
