What to say about Sonia Sotomayor Báez? At a personal level, I sincerely congratulate both her and her family, for making it to the top of our society. From humble and rough beginnings in The Bronx, the have all made it to the top. Her mother, after toiling hard all her life as a Nurse Assistant, now lives comfortably retired in Margate, Fla. Her brother is an accomplished physician in Upper New York State. Intellectually, she’s no dummy – Suma Cum Laude of her Class in Princeton, in 1976, and Juris Doctor from Yale in 1979. She then went on to be an Assistant District Attorney in New York City and an Intellectual Property Rights Attorney in private practice.
Thomas Jefferson wanted to make this, a land of Meritocracy – where through hard work and determination, anyone can make it to the top. The Sotomayor Báez Family are perfect examples of this principle in action. Congratulations to all.
Her judicial philosophy however, is nearly as left as they come. That is not surprising, if you know a bit about the dynamics of Puerto Rican politics and sentiments. Like any other populous society, Puerto Rico leans to the left by an overwhelming majority. Only 15% or so of the population would consider themselves as right-of-center, in the political spectrum. When you couple this root political sentiment, with the environment that the slums of the New York Barrio gives you, it is not surprising that The Sotomayor Báez’s were molded into Populist Left-of-Center Political Philosophy.
So it is not surprising to see that she’s a big ACLU supporter, an ACTIVIST JUDGE that sees the U.S. Constitution as a “Living Breathing and Evolving” Document. In a May 2nd interview with the Puerto Rican newspaper, El Nuevo Día, she states: “I am in favor of using international law as a frame of reference and as part of a broad process of reflection in the courts of the U.S., because the pondering (consideration) of ideas has no borders”.
To all this, I am not surprised. Our President, is a Socialist. His first elected position was under The CHICAGO NEW PARTY, a scion of the Democratic Socialist of America Party. He was raised politically in this party; he was nurtured in this party, and as of today still thinks like this party. For him to select a like-minded Sotomayor Báez for SCOTUS, is not surprising at all. I do not feign surprise, one bit.
The Democrats have full control of The Senate. The Republicans are supine and impotent. Don’t think for one moment that Senator Snowe of Maine will join any putative filibuster on Sotomayor’s nomination. Unless she has a particularly hideous skeleton in her closet, she will be our next Justice in the Supreme Court – Plain and Simple.
Which reminds me:
