But some no-name official somewhere in the permanent bureaucracy did, and that's that. Two centuries ago, Tocqueville wrote:

There was a time in Europe in which the law, as well as the consent of the people, clothed kings with a power almost without limits. But almost never did it happen that they made use of it.

True. The king was an absolute tyrant - in theory. But in practice he was in his palace hundreds of miles away, and for the most part you got on with your life relatively undisturbed. As Tocqueville wrote:

Although the entire government of the empire was concentrated in the hands of the emperor alone, and although he remained, in time of need, the arbiter of all things, the details of social life and of individual existence ordinarily escaped his control.

But what would happen, he wondered, if administrative capability were to evolve to make it possible "to subject all of his subjects to the details of a uniform set of regulations"? That moment has now arrived in much of the western world, including America.

Frequent commenter Rivrdog opines on why this will never happen again.

There is truth in his words. The genius of the Left has been their success as getting so many of us used to or reliant upon government largesse. Myself included - yes, I have my own funds laid aside for retirement, but I'm still drawing a government pension, government disability, and harbor some small hope of getting back some of my social security.

Of course, there are some, such as Professor Teresa Ghilarducci, who propose to confiscate my privately accumulated funds, give me a fixed return (i.e., just another pension) and use the rest for whatever purposes the political class devises.

Because we're all too stupid for words, and the stupid, ignorant and lazy shouldn't have a lesser retirement than the others who earned it - the earners should just lower their expectations and be happy that they have the opportunity to help others. And to feel other than Hopey-Changey about that is, well, unpatriotic and dissent is only the highest form of patriotism when it emanates from the left.

Otherwise... there is no debate.

Jules Crittenden has more on the historical side of things - It was about hope, and change...

        Tim,

*Many thanks*, for the invite. But a long time ago, I "visited" many places, "interacted" with the local population in an appropriate way, consistent with the goals of the trip Then, there was this one day, I came home after being in the hospital. Before I left the hospital, I was heavily sedated and I woke up as soon as I got to the front door of my house. Now before I got home, a group of old Vets that I've known for 50 years, they squared away the house, clean, food, bills and essentials.

Before I left the hospital, Doc came into my room and said, "You and your body, need to have a chat. Be prepared, she is going to be talking about change, serious change. She's gonna want to stay put, just don't argue. You'll find a way through this." The thing Doc and I would later talk about this subject, the strategy. The last visit with Doc, I told him about the computer/internet strategy. He turned and smiled, he also grabbed a list links. The Vets previously noted, are happy with the idea, they know where I am, no worry.

To you, Tim, the offer means a great deal. I'll never come up there, I feel like I've already had the *high honor* of having fellowship with You and your Family.

Thank you,
Grumpy,

I couldn't give you an exact measurement, but suffice to say, there are times that i would welcome any of that "Glow-Bull Warming stuff" that the flatlanders keep talkin' about.

Where i live, in Bath, we get more freezing rain than snow. What that means is that we usually get a good deposit of white, followed by a frezzing rain that gives us a sheet of heavy firm coating over everything. Back in January, we lost power for 4.5 days. It was some wicked cold, let me tell you. Me and the young'n had to layer up and stay indoors and pretty much pile into one room for the duration. I ventured forth to open the faucets to keep the pipes from freezing, and used the Sterno stove to keep some warm food and liquids into us.

And ayuh, they call us Maineiacs for a reason... Maine has nearly 2800 miles of shoreline due to it's craggy and convoluted eastern edge. That's one reason why some 1/3 of the marijuana smuggled into the country used to come through here. A smuggler's paradise, that. Presque Isle is about 5 hour's drive from where I live, and I'm 1/5 hours north of the southern border. Maine is the same size as the rest of New England put together.

Anytime you head up this way, you give me a shout. I'd be happy to have you and yours over for to supper and a good night's entertainment.

Same goes for anyone of the denizens, posters, commenters and general ne'er do wells like BillT & Dusty. :)

   Respects,
I don't want you to focus on the most recent winter, 2008-2009, but I want to focus one year earlier, 2007-2008. During the winter of 2007-2008, how much snow did you have on the ground? From what the Family and friends were saying, on the day I talked with them by phone, they had 17+ feet of snow on the ground. Hint, it was not melting.
AW1...and the ingratitude...when Maine was made a state it was called The Missouri Compromise. Who were they anyway? Why wasn't it called the Maine is Back Compromise? I think Maine should be able to claim any part of Missouri it wants and be able to ship the tourists sneaking up from Boston every summer there.

Just my opinion and I love the Rangely Section of Maine.

Today, I must be one of those dumb Vets. I just didn't catch the cipher or the key to the key to the encryption of this article. So' I'm just going to ask you openly.

You write, "Of course, there are some, such as Professor Teresa Ghilarducci, who propose to confiscate my privately accumulated funds, give me a fixed return (i.e., just another pension) and use the rest for whatever purposes the political class devises." I just have a question. Where did you suggest she should store this idea in a nice warm dark moist area nearby?

AW1 Tim, I know Maine's unfortunate history and chose not to mention it and honestly I had forgotten Maine celebrated this fine holiday. I just wish it meant more in Boston than a Marathon and a Red Sox game. The state where I grew up was once huge owning land all the way to Pacific but is now among the smallest, Connecticut..

We also celebrate it here in Maine. Primarily, it's because we were once illegally annexed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and became the "Province of Maine", until we quite rightly restored ourselves to statehood in 1820. We should have been the 14th colony, and signers of the Declaration, etc, but ol' King George the Turd and his minnions had seen otherwise, earlier on.

Ah well... that's a couple centuries back, but still and all, it's good that we still remember where it all began, and likely where it will re-emerge.

     respects,
Quibbling as is my way, I believe the Captain Parker quote is more likely, "...if they mean to have a war..." 18th century English and all that don't you know.
Thanks for posting about Patriot's Day, which seems to be a forgotten day outside Taxachusetts..
