[Article courtesy www.stratfor.com, used with permission.]This article lays out one of the fundamentals of the whole "torture" issue that gets overlooked in the emotion. The intelligence failure that put us in the position where harsh interrogation techniques were a legitimate consideration.By George FriedmanApril 20, 2009The Obama administration published a series of memoranda on torture issued under the Bush administration. The memoranda, most of which dated from the period after 9/11, authorized measures including depriving prisoners of solid food, having them stand shackled and in uncomfortable positions, leaving them in cold cells with inadequate clothing, slapping their heads and/or abdomens, and...

The thing I disagree with in that article is whether any of those things done actually rose to a level appropriate for the term "torture".

Imo, this is just another slow capitulation to the meme generated for its own nefarious reasons.
I agree with much of it, however.

Well written and interesting piece and reason why I always return to the Castle. Thanks for posting. Calling Obama naive is not getting the picture. Obama realised that Gitmo was a PR blunder and there was nothing, or not enough, the USA got in return. I don't remember him stopping the "export" of suspects by the CIA to torture-friendly nations though.

That was a very good piece but no where does he mention the Anthrax Scare. People were running around NYC like chickens. That also added to the hysteria of what we did not know. Who did it, where did it come from, how extensive was the attack? It got real crazy when you couldn't even trust your mailman.

We should also remember what the Church Committee did to the CIA when Senator Church and his ilk gutted the CIA.

We seem to always learn the hard way.

Why was our intelligence gathering inadequate pre-9/11? Apparently, we've already forgotten about the actions of some Democratic politicians, like Sen. Robert Torrecelli:

Sen. Torricelli Played Key Role in Closing Down CIA Ops
http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2001/9/17/162056.shtml

And the infamous wall created by the Mistress of Doom, Jamie Gorelick. Etc etc etc.

Now we see the Obama Administration trying to out-Carter the naivete of Presidents Jimmy and Bubba J. Personally, if we're going to err - and we will, since we're fallible and imperfect humans - I'd prefer to err on the side of caution.

As was said, "The farther we go from 9/11, the closer we get to 9/10."
