It was Michael Kinsley who said that a gaffe is when a politician inadvertently speaks the truth.

I believe this quote pretty much sums up the BO administration nicely. I think it would make a good Tea Party sign...

"...you find some group that's small enough where they can't beat you up, and you tax them and you tell everybody else, 'See? We didn't tax you.'"

Sounds like the Schip Bill to me.....  Eeevuul tobacconists!  But, like all these schemes, the revenue projections will fall far short of the funding needed for these bills and as a result, everyone will feel the pain of new Federal AND State taxes!

Too bad, so sad they bankrupted an entire industry as well as endangered thousands of mom n' pop blue collar shops.....  Oh well, it was 'for the children'.

Rapture!

I am afraid that it's more insidious than that.

1- You create a massive new bureaucracy that needs gobs of new tax dollars.  i.e. SCHIP.  Where 25- year-old "children" receive nationalized medical services.  Who's gonna fight giving medical care to "children"?

2-You target sinful "evil" saps to pay for it.  i.e. Rise tobbacco taxes sky-high.

3-People either stop smoking, or get their smokes from underground sources (Indian Reservations), because they can't afford their habit through legal means.

4-Tax revenue from tobbacco plummets. At which time the government either raise tobbacco taxes even higher, and/or taxes other groups in the general economy to feed their newly created bureaucratic piggy.

Kevin - That is exactly how I feel about the tax on cigarettes, etc.  I don't smoke, but I know they are coming for me (and my red meat and chocolate).  Up here in Tax-achusetts, Deval is already trying to tax soda and candy.  When that happens I will cross the border into New Hampshire or Rhode Island for my Coke & M&Ms.

Careful, Maggie -- when that happens, the revenoors will be stopping incoming cars at the border, demanding to examine each M&M for the teeny, tiny "MA TaxPaid" stamp that'll have to be etched onto each street-legal orb.

After NJ hiked its syntax on terbaccy a few years ago, NJSP set up roadblocks checkpoints on the bridges between Trenton and Morrisville, PA. State employes merely traveled the extra five miles upriver to the Scudders Falls bridge, but the additional travel time extended each one's rather nebulous "lunch hour" by an additional 30-45 minutes, and the staties were told to knock it off so that employees could return to the business of meddling with normal citizens in a timely fashion.

It's economic lynching, plain and simple.

As for taxing soda and candy...I heard of that.  They can take away all my rights and my property, but I swear that every last one of them standing between me and my sugar will not live to tell the tale.

Full disclosure: During this particular visit to this site, I have so far eaten three Pepperidge Farm Soft Baked Chocolate Chunk Dark Chocolate Brownie cookies.  39 grams of sugar and counting!
