As a lifelong recipient of government health care, I've been educated this last week or so on many of the nuances of private health care that were undiscovered country to me.

And, I suspect, new territory to many of the government people who were involved in floating the idea that Secretary Shinseki mentioned to Congress.

I bet Secretary Shinseki missed a bunch of the nuances, too - being a member of the same health care system I am. I rather suspect his education has been rather more brutal and direct than mine. Most of ya just treated me like a kid who rides the short bus and can't help himself when he drools on his shirt.

Those of us above 50% are entitled to full coverage, but everybody with a rated injury is entitled to coverage for service-connected issues.
Or have I missed an eligibility change?

There are no easy answers. Part of the problem has to do with the time frame of your military service. The question becomes, "Were you drafted and then wounded or disabled in the Military?" I just can not see charging the health insurance for the care of a service connected disabled Military Veteran. It won't take long before the insurance rates for the Veterans to explode. John, I will echo you and say, "The VA doesn't require the service connected Vets to have health insurance." In my view, this should be a part of the cost of war.

I wouldn't think this idea would be a problem - except for one point that the American Legion makes that I consider very, very appropriate - most private health insurance comes with a lifetime "cap" on benefits - after it's paid out X many dollars, that's it.

This plan could do that when applied to a seriously injured Soldier or Veteran.

That's why this is a bad ida.
While I don't pretend to understand a lot of the issue, I do think it's telling that the Commander of the American Legion David Rehbein was "clearly angry" after meeting with President Obama on this issue.

That said, I hope the President tries to push this, and that there is a nasty fight in Congress over it. Expose it, and give it airtime. Then everyone will see.
