A man who was stocking shelves and playing arena ball in his twenties was named NFL Man of the Year for his charity work... just before he took the field as a quarterback in the Super Bowl...

The crew of US Airways Flight 1529 was presented, receiving honor they are due for having saved 159 lives with their skill and bravery...

Faith Hill sang a lovely version of America the Beautiful...

The Colors were presented...

And on a day when we're still basking in the afterglow of a monumental step forward in Iraq and the pain-edged pride we have in those whose sacrifice made it possible... A woman stood on stage for the first time since she lost her mother, brother and nephew in a horrifying spasm of violence, and sang the National Anthem like I have never heard it sung in my life...

Oh, and they played football, too. I hear it was pretty exciting there at the end... ;)

BONUS: General Petraeus conducted the coin toss.

Greetings:

Not to be contentious, but it is now being reported that our National Anthem was actually lip-sync-ed as opposed to be sung (live). Me, I waiting for some organization to buy the actual sheet music and have the entertainer sing that after explaining what an national anthem really is.

Hey, back inna day, this porker lineman (then weighing 240 lbs in college) had a 4.5 in the 40 and 10.3 in the hundred, and a 23.5 in the 220.

We aren't all only geared for power.

Now I've got a 23.5 in the 40, and haven't run 100 yards in years...

It was a GREAT game.... which was almost won by my team of choice...

I have to admit though: I couldn't stomach watching that Obama loving peacnik take the stage for half-time. We watched the 'Cheerleaders vs. Couch Potatoes" game instead. Much more entertaining, by the way.

JoA- I still can't believe that a defensive lineman out-ran the entire Cardinals OFFENSE, for a 100 yard touchdown run... that has got to be one for the history books. Unreal.

Weekly NFL highlight films shown in Germany were highly anticipated in our NCO club and you had to get there early to get the best seat.

They were, of course, shown on Wednesday which just happened to be the weekly 'Happy Hour".

Week old football........5 cent Heinekens........life was good.

I played high school and college football, but I never developed a taste for watching it on TV.

But some of my better memories of Germany in the early 70's are going to the Frankfurt Officer's Club with my father, to watch the weekly NFL highlight films (AFN television was just getting started in Germany then, and only broadcast at that point in Bremerhaven). The only pro team I ever really followed was the Steelers in their last period of dominance.

Around the office I work in, the Steelers hold a pretty tight grip, so I'm expecting it will be an easy week...

That said, I saw only one play of last night's game (I told ya I don't watch) - and that was James Harrison's interception and record-setting return for the touchdown. Hey, if you're only going to watch one play, that wasn't a bad one to pick!

And this year, as Fuzzy notes, had some good stories tied in, too.

My favorite story is that of Steeler Sean McHugh, who started the season as a member of the record-breakingly hapless Detroit Tigers, was cut because, well, they needed to improve their roster... and will be getting a Superbowl ring now. That's a pretty good rags to riches story, if you ask me!

I was thinking of Ms. Hudson's personal tragedy as she stood up to sing. Which she did so well that I forgot that, and remembered why Ilked her so much in Dream Girls.

Oh yes, it was exciting at the end. I shoulda bet the Hubster - he wanted Arizona to win. I had to root for my Steelers, and would have done so even if Chuck hadn't been there ;-)
