Regni brought more discipline to the academy after a 2003 sexual assault scandal, imposing an earlier wake-up time for cadets

Yeah, that's right, if you're too sleepy to keep your eyes open, you're too sleepy to rape the women!

Why do I suspect General Regni was a rather unpopular superintendent?

"Popular Superintendent" is an oxymoron, especially among Cadets. But he is seen as less of a threat than the Commandant.

Being an official Auld Phart, I attribute a lot of the problems to a constant bombardment of BS from the outside world and a basic unwillingness of the USAF to stick to its guns in keeping the place a military academy vice a college with a weird dress code. But that's just me...coming from a distant past where Sunday Chapel services were still mandatory formations and the only civilian instructors we ever saw were visiting lecturers in Arnold Hall. Harrrumph...

Hahaha that reminds me of elementary school in Ohio, when we went to visit some recreation colonial village and they told us that supposedly Sunday church attendance was mandatory and failure to show up would result in a visit from the sheriff...

I found that rather horrendous...and I can't say that I think religious observation should be a part of military training.  However, I agree with your point about a military academy vs a "college with a weird dress code".  (Weird indeed, I wish we could go back to the WWI uniform...)
