Afghanistan: Get Some!

From Ace, a report on a Marine unit that reminds the Taliban and Al Qaeda why going "full frontal" with the US military is extremely deadly.  One marine [ed...not sniper, designated marksman, thanks Heartless, though I realized the mistake about two minutes before catching your comment...from another military.com article, M-14 and designated Marksmen] goes 20 for 20 in the "one shot, one kill" contest for the lives of the men in his unit.  Obviously, he won:

"I didn't realize how many bad guys there were until we had broken through the enemies' lines and forced them to retreat. It was roughly 250 insurgents against 30 of us," the corporal said. "It was a good day for the Marine Corps. We killed a lot of bad guys, and none of our guys were seriously injured."

The Royal Gurhkas go Rambo on the Taliban in the much contested Musa Qala via Long War Journal:
Eventually they managed to crawl through to where Yubraj was lying and dragged him into a compound which they knew was clear of Taliban, while Dhan gave them covering fire with his own rifle in one hand and Yubraj's in the other.

"I never noticed the bullets landing around me," he said. "But I was shocked when I heard from other members of the section and the platoon how close the rounds had been. I thought we would not come back alive."

Actually, not a sniper, a designated marksman.  Which means he's hasn't been sent to a full up sniper school and given a proper sniper rifle, usually of 7.62NATO caliber.  He's the Marine who's the best shot in his squad (maybe platoon), and he's got an accurized (free float barrel, match trigger), scoped M16.

Minor difference to non-infantry types, but it actually makes it more impressive to us (former) grunts.

Not even 10 to 1 odds.  The insurgents didn't stand a chance :-)

The Marines have always been proponents of aimed rifle fire. This is the reason why.

Taliban nightmare: having to choose between facing the Marines, or instead moving somewhere else where there are Gurkhas.

heh.

HL, knowing what a designated marksman is actually made it VERY impressive to this civilian...
outstanding job by our Marines

Lots to be impressed about.  Outnumbered, 100% hit, 100% dead under fire, not even trained fully using the best weapons.  We're often impressed by the Marines, doesn't mean we don't appreciate their skill.  Well done! Where's the next 20?

The Taliban impressive?  Well... I'm sure they run fast ...maybe I'm impressed they manage to recruit enough people to keep throwing them away.

My father used to say Gurhkas were incredibly good at soldiering.  I guess this backs him up.
