On the Good Ship Titanic: If you can't beat them, join them

As I noted on Monday from the pit of my despair, the reason that McCain is not resonating is because, regardless of some of his more populist announcements, as a Republican, conservative, non-socialist, he simply does not have the message nor the desire to give people what they want.

What they want is for the government that they have been paying into like a never ending, bottomless piggy bank, to give them back something in return.  Since McCain won't promise that, they are going to vote for Obama.
54 year-old white male, voted Kerry '04, Bush '00, Dole '96, hunter, NASCAR fan...hard for Obama said: "I'm gonna hate him the minute I vote for him. He's gonna be a bad president. But I won't ever vote for another god-damn Republican. I want the government to take over all of Wall Street and bankers and the car companies and Wal-Mart run this county like we used to when Reagan was President."

The next was a woman, late 50s, Democrat but strongly pro-life. Loved B. and H. Clinton, loved Bush in 2000. "Well, I don't know much about this terrorist group Barack used to be in with that Weather guy but I'm sick of paying for health insurance at work and that's why I'm supporting Barack."

I'll be very honest with you.  The Republicans should set up and take notice.  They need to dig up Newt Gingrich's "Contract with America" and look up the small print that indicates the fines and punishments for breaking the deal.  Basically, the Republicans promised to cut spending and cut taxes.  Neither actually happened.  Blame it on the Democrats, too, but they are hardly considered the "conservative" party, even with their "fiscal conservative" branch.

Instead, people see that the government has been taking money and taking money and taking money, then giving it to...well, most people have no idea who is getting this money.  Oh, they have some idea.  Like air lines, oil companies, energy companies, universities, whatever special interest groups can troop up to Capitol Hill and stay there for more than a week will most likely get some money out of the government or some sort of extra "break".  In short, the average citizen pretty much feels like that everybody else is getting something out of this tapped keg so why not them?

Yeah, it is very much a "if you can't beat them, join them" type of mentality.  People would have been a little more receptive to the idea of cutting government spending and leaving the tax breaks in place if they thought for one minute anyone was actually going to live up to that promise.  After a decade and a half of Republican congress and Republican presidency that saw some of the largest increases ever, nobody believes that anymore.

Of course, none of those folks who are tramping up to the government gate to get their due actually looked at their own demands, like expanded Medicare drug coverage, and figured out that they helped create that mess.  Probably because that is all they wanted and the government could have or should have reduced or stagnated other spending.   People are somewhat budget wise in their personal spending and they get that, if you spend more in one place you might have to cut back in another.

Yet, we never got that from the government.  As much as Democrats have controlled congress for the last two years, that doesn't mitigate the last 15.   Now the American people are close to throwing a serious fit, deciding to vote for the big Spender who is promising to give them everything they want.

Why? Because, if you can't beat them, join them.

I just have this odd image in my head of the Titanic as it was going down.  You ever wonder how many people trying to escape steerage and middle passage made their way past the buffet tables on the upper decks only to stop and stuff as much food as possible in their pants pockets before they went down with the ship?

Heh.  The guy wasn't paying attention when Reagan governed, and the lady is tired of paying for health insurance... so she wants *me* to pay for her health insurance.

Heh.  Of course, as a military retiree, I don't have a lot of room to talk about health insurance.

But I did spend 20-odd years earning it, at least.

mmm the national debt under reagan went up with 20 %, under bush senior with 13, under clinton it went down with 9 % and thanks to junior it will be up again with 11 %. yep, vote republican, because there is a big chance obama will have to raise tax to clean up

I'm still voting for Kodos...AGAIN.

Why is it that the Democrat Congress under Reagan doesn't get much blame?  Don't they make the bills and propose the spending?

I know one answer, why didn't Reagan cut it off with the veto?

Nah! Obama is pretty, good smile, resonant voice.  What else do you need to know?
Sigh.

Andrew Johnson, Lincoln's VP and Prez after Lincoln died, vetoed the radical Republicans bills to provide civil liberties and security to the freed blacks of the South many many times.

Geez, Kat, everytime I try to remain positive about this election and the future, you come up with these little nuggets. LOL

And lest some try to claim that Andrew Johnson was a Republican because he was Abe's VP (as is the normal case today), they need to be reminded that Johnson was a Democrat - specifically a "War Democrat", a faction that broke from the other Dems to nominate Lincoln in 1864, with Johnson as VP on the "Union Party" ticket.

Kat,

I can some small (extremely small, almost atomic scale) comfort from the fact that, should the nightmare happen and the "One" becomes president, that, coupled with the Democrat-majority Congress will practically ensure a Republican majority for the next several election cycles.

However, being prudent as I am, I have lots of ammo and cases of MRE's stashed away in special caches.   :)

   Respects,

The reason that Obama will be elected is that people want the Govt to be responsible for their debts like child care, medical, schooling.   We have become an entitled nation. That way they have more money to play and buy toys with.  They may get those things but at a cost they aren't willing to pay.

"Oh, I'm a good old rebel, and that's just what I am.  I will not be reconstructed and I do not give a damn.  300,000 thousand yankees died of Southern steel and shot.  I wish that we'd got 3 million, but that's just what we got."

Raise the Gadsden Flag, fix bayonets, rally round the Bonny Blue Flag!

The Republic is dead.  Long Live the Republic!

John pretty much pre-empted my comment. I've not much in common with a man who wants the government to run businesses, nor a woman who wants the same people to pay her bills.

Ymarsakar, perhaps Johnson vetoed those bills because he thought they were unconstitutional? The Radical Republicans were well-named, and in my opinion did more to wreck race relations in this country for two or three generations with their "our FULL slate, NOW!!" approach. Feh. They shoved voting rights for black Americans (i.e. those just recently removed from the status of property; the vast majority of whom lacked any education) down the throats of the southern states while most of the north ignored their own black population.

Actually, Johnson tried to implement Lincoln's plans for for re-integrating the southern states, but the Radicals easily derailed his work. Alas, the man lacked Lincoln's touch and patience.

John Wilkes Booth, rot in Hell.

Alas,   We have the government we (as a nation) deserve, and on January 20th, we'll have it forever.
I'm beyond despondent at this point, and will only cast my votein hopes that they HAVE TO use the dead, or the fictitious, or the Felons to counter it.

But... trapped, as I am, in a "Blue State", I know people just LIKE the respondents in the article-and people who are, if anything, worse.    These are the people who buy a house on the approach path to the airport, then bitch about the noise and try to get the flights shut down.  They're the people who buy a property near a shooting range, and then file suits or pressure lawmakers to shut t he range down because of the noise.  They're the folks who'll vote to "save the Salmon" then bitch afterward because their electric and water bills went up, they're the folks who say "There ought to be a law..." concerning something merely because they don't like it, or it is not to their, personal, advantage.

Every day, I'm surrounded by people who want to be told what to eat, what to drink, and when to go to bed.  The only freedom they desire is freedom from responsibility-and they are the Majority now.

They take their happy-pills, turn the kids over to the State to raise, buy shit on Credit that they can't afford,  duck out of work whenever they physically can, slack when they aren't ducking out, and Obama represents them.  We're toast.

Cannonshop,

Welcome to life in the People's Republic of Maine.  We are making some small inroads, but it's a long and bloody conflict up here.   You are so very right in your description. It sounds exactly like the folks in my own town. Sigh.

 Kevin,

"We are a band of brothers, and native to the soil. Fighting for our liberties we gained through honest toil. And when our rights were threatened, the cry rose near and far! All rally 'round the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star! "

Hurrah!  Hurrah!
For American rights, Hurrah!
Cheer for the Bonnie Blue flag that bears a single star!

As long as the Union was faithful to her trust
Like friends and brethren, kind were we, and just
But now, when Socialist treachery attempts our rights to mar
We hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Hurrah! Hurrah!
For American rights, Hurrah!
Cheer for the Bonnie Blue flag that bears a single star!

Unfortunately, most of the people I see want the government to be their mommy. Cannonshot is right. We're screwed. How do you learn to fight for something if everything has always been handed to you on a platter?

The truly frustrating part of it, is that there's no where left to go- the frontier's been closed for over a century, everywhere else is even MORE restrictive and infested with those who want to be cared for or think they're owed something they didn't earn.

and Leslie, it's the "Nanny State" methinks.

Give me a place where I can go
where they won't bother me.
A place where I can work and live,
be responsible and Free.

Show me a land where I may go,
Away from demanding hands.
A place where I can build my home
and be sovereign on my land.

Let me take risks on my own hook,
both good and bad for me,
ME responsible for the end result,
it's the base right of liberty.

(Okay, so I'm a terrible poet. )

My goodness... such sentiments are (now) being expressed.

Didn't know we had secesh on the blog.... 8)

For the whole song of the Bonnie Blue Flag

And for the lyricists lurking amongst us, the variations offered so far are spot on!

"Oh I'm a good old rebel, Now that's just what I am,
And for this Yankee nation, I do not give a damn,
I'm glad I fought against her, I only wish we'd won,
And I ain't asked any pardon, for anything I've done..."

Rebels?

Try "browncoats...."

Heh.
