Ukraine Angst

Shouldn't be too surprised that the Ukraine would see Russia's acts against Georgia as a threat to the their future sovereignty or, at least, strong arm tactics.

Ukraine says it reserves right to bar Russian navy

"In order to prevent the circumstances in which Ukraine could be drawn into a military conflict ... Ukraine reserves the right to bar ships which may take part in these actions from returning to the Ukrainian territory until the conflict is solved," said the statement which was posted on the ministry's Web site.

The Russian Navy on the Crimean Peninsula has been a sore spot since the Ukraine declared independence.

I believe there is another reason why this happening NOW: think of the world's oil market, the price of oil is falling and the Russian economy is only surviving on petrodollars; with this source going dry, what is Russi to do?? Get hold of another pipe line going to Europe so they have another leverage for the time when they will want something for nothing. Plus, Georgia has lots of strategic (military-type) natural resources and Batumi and Poti had been Russian Navy ports for a long time... Of course, they want it back...

What about Finland in 38 & 39, the Baltic States in 40, a third of Poland in 40, Hungry in 56 and that little drive by in 68. Georgia is just another play out of the same playbook. It is a little hard to believe that Georgia would start something this overt with Russia sitting in country.
Good for Ukraine. If only now Turkey will send its Navy to Batumi (Poti is just too far from the water border line for both Georgia and international taste), the whole Russian thing just might collapse on itself...
