From an email: Not sure what this means but it seems that very shortly Coasties will be able to apply to serve with the SEALS.My thoughts? Heh. It sounds to me like HLD wants to have an in-house, non-DoD SpecOps ability not subject to Posse Comitatus. It could just be the Coast Guard wants SpecOps trained ship-boarders for some of those feistier drug runners and pirates, too. Or both. The Navy had to agree to it, so I'm guessing they don't see any issues from a roles and missions perspective on their end.ALCOAST 367/08COMDTNOTE 1000SUBJ: ASSIGNMENT OF COAST GUARD PERSONNEL...

Bronze - I wasn't engaging in conspiracy theory - I was just noting that having SEAL-trained personnel, over time, gives the Coast Guard a core of people to develop a non-Posse Comitatus restrained capability, resident in HLD.

That's simply a fact. You over-read into what I had to say.

That, and CBTs assertion that they'd like some diesel subs is interesting, too, as it blurs distinctions between the Navy and the CG.

That's not a conspiracy theory. It's an observation.
LOL.
Maybe. I guess not chasing the Gotland would be fun. And, hey, if one dude is right that'd still be a good thing because ASW is not practiced enough.

Even if they don't get subs I like the idea of home/away responsiblility.

Oh, you know what will happen then, right? Instead of the Australians or renting Swedes, the Coastie subs will spend all their time playing "Sink the Navy" as a part of the Navy's ASW training.

Hey, in this month's PRoceedings it turns out CG wants diesel subs too. I like this in a sense. Total bifurcation of 'home games' and 'away games' sounds good to me, so long as it all gets funded properly(and that's a BIG caveat, neh?)

The Posse Commitatus thing is a bit troubling, but, hey, worse things can happen. At the end of the day I trust a small group in a 'white blood cell' capacity. Better than having intel guys passing CHP and other CA police info in a sub-rosa manner. If the need is there, fill it in a way that does the least harm.
