Yanno, there is something worse than Senator Obama ascending to the right hand of G-d, making it to the White House as a four-year occupant of the Oval Office.

That is Senator Obama being murdered by an a$$hat of any stripe or political persuasion.

First off, just because.

Secondly - you want to watch the Federal government actually *become* what its detractors fear it to already be in terms of a police state? Just let some idiot with a mis-wired brain attempt, much less succeed, in killing the Senator, or his wife, or his running mate.

The ballot box is the place to kill bad ideas in our polity. No where else, as Jay notes over at Stop the ACLU,

Or, as Carol Liebau puts it:

Obviously, all of us can disagree with every single wrongheaded and misguided idea emanating from the Denver convention center -- but as Americans, let's pray for the safety of Barack Obama, his family, and all those in attendance at the convention.

Let's beat Barack fair and square, and then be able to watch him lead a long and healthy life, together with his family.
The same thing applies, of course, to the other side of the coin, Senator McCain's campaign. And for those who drip the vitriol and hatred (vice well-aimed political snark) at either candidate - such as the truther a$$hat seen here molesting Michelle Malkin (though the breathless reportage at Founding Bloggers is overdone to my taste)- remember this - like it or not, think it's stupid or not, you are helping fertilize the field where the a$$hats grow. -the Armorer

*********************************

And on the topics of freedom, unity and good citizenship... The country is gearing up for the annual nationwide Freedom Walk (September 7) in commemoration of the victims of 9-11 and the first responders and service members who help keep us safe. This is an effort of America Supports You, the DoD clearinghouse for military support organizations and those they assist. - FbL

*********************************

Note the little thingy (yes, that's a technical term) over there in the sidebar, regarding the Freedom Walk. -the Armorer

*********************************

Now we see the new Army Class "A" uniform - where it becomes clear that the beret was maroon (which I figured because of the bloused boots) and the second "liver badge" on the soldier's right-hand pocket (the badge with the patch of the 101st Airborne Divison) is how they're going to handle combat patches. Heh. Me still no likey. But, I don't have to go buy one, either. Good thing, too. Omar the Tent Maker charges extra for Big and Tall. Especially Big. -the Armorer

********************************

Bob Owens weighs in on our meth-using sniper wannabes over at Confederate Yankee:

The Left's Obama Assassination Fantasy
There are a lot of people who have hopes of Barack Obama being the target of an assassination attempt during the Democratic National Convention this week in Denver, and not all of them are his enemies. The arrest of a four drug users with stolen weapons and a single outlandish assassination claim has made that all too clear.

Local news reporters see the possibility of a career-enhancing national story. National news reporters in mass market liberal enclaves see an opportunity to once again push a meme they've been hammering at for over a year, of a racist American heartland. This meme, of Americans as violent backwards yokels, is a meme that smug Europeans dearly love as it helps them maintain the delusion of continental sophistication in the face of their own cultural decline.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the unhinged few in a nation of 300 million that would like to see Obama dead, including thus far a halfwit bail-bondsman wannabe, a Charlotte, NC man suffering the lingering effects of a brain injury, and now a quartet of meth-addled idiots with rumored ties to white supremacists and outlaw bikers.

As you may well imagine, bloggers pounced on the story as the local news did, taking shreds of information and trying to determine just how serious of a threat Barack Obama faced.

As it turns out, not much at all:

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires. Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute. Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is. The UAVs we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&amp;amp;I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now. Of course, now I have to call them UAS's, because someone got a Legion of Merit for the name change.Anyway, I call the post H&I Fires because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to that particular topic. Another term of art that might be appropriate is Free Fire Zone.
I remember watching General Jackman escorting Mrs Reagan at the funeral of her husband, in the National Cathedral.

He looked right kewl&manly in that suit.

Berets? I dunno. The excuse for them is, that one is a tanker, or a paratrooper, and thus does not have the capability to wear normal hats, because of the exigencies of the service. For regular soldiers, I would say no to berets.

Besides, Airborne guys wear red berets because Daphne DuMaurier thought they looked cool, and tankers wear black berets because Nazi tankers wore them, which means they're badasse

The new class A and the new dress blue are the same uniform, Frank.

Among the differences - everybody will have the trouser stripes, and the troops get the thin gold soutache on the sleeve.

I've not seen the officer version yet.

But I haven't gone looking, either.

Oh, I think there's two of you.

And I imagine there had to be rather more than that in the ranks. I don't think the SMA and Chief would have run roughshod over everybody like that.

I just don't like taking the fanciness of the dress uniform and making it the everyday uniform, and then *also* saying it's the dress uniform. We're over or under dressing at some point...

I understand the logic, I just think it makes us look like "the very model of a modern major general" which is *not* a compliment in the usage.

It does serve to distinguish us from the Marines. But not in a good way.

Since you're the one who's going to be wearing it, I'm glad you like it.

Me, I'd do my level best to be assigned to units that never unpack the things.
