From a press release:
"Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates announced today that the President has nominated Lt. Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody of the Army for appointment to the grade of general and assignment as commander, Army Materiel Command.
Women continue to achieve great success and make invaluable contributions to the defense of this nation. This is an historic occasion for the Department of Defense and I am proud to nominate Lt. Gen. Ann Dunwoody for a fourth star," said Secretary Gates. "Her 33 years of service, highlighted by extraordinary leadership and devotion to duty, make her exceptionally qualified for this senior position.
" Lt. Gen. Dunwoody was commissioned in 1975 and has served in several positions of command, to include commanding general of Army Combined Arms Support Command and Fort Lee, and deputy chief of staff, Logistics.
Lt. Gen. Dunwoody is currently the deputy commanding general/chief of staff, Army Materiel Command.
If confirmed by the Senate, she will be the first female four-star general in American history. The first female service member to achieve the rank of Brigadier General was Col. Anna Mae Hays, chief of the Army Nurse Corps, on June 11, 1970. There are currently 57 active-duty female general officers in the Armed Forces, five of whom are lieutenant generals."
The Senate may not approve any more judges before President Bushs' term is over, but I'm guessing this nomination will get moved to a vote quickly enough.
Which it should, mind you.
In response to comments - here's her bio:
In 1984, LTG Dunwoody was assigned to the Military Personnel Center as the Quartermaster Captains Assignment Officer. Following Command and General Staff College, she joined the 82d Airborne Division where she served as the Division Property Book Officer and then as the Executive Officer of the 407th Supply and Transportation Battalion. She deployed with the 82d as the Division Parachute Officer for Desert Shield and Desert Storm from September 1990 to March 1991. Upon her return she was assigned as the Deputy Chief of Staff, G4.
In 1992, she assumed command of the 407th Supply and Transportation Battalion, 82d Airborne Division, she then assumed command of the 782d Main Support Battalion in October 1993. Following command she attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Her next assignment was as a strategic planner for the Chief of Staff of the Army (CSA). In June of 1996, she took command of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) Support Command. Following command she was assigned to Fort Belvoir where she served as the Executive Officer to the Director, Defense Logistics Agency.
From July 2000 through August 2002 she served as the Commanding General of the 1st Corps Support Command (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, deploying a Log Task Force in support of OEF and the Joint Logistics Command to Uzbekistan in support of CJTF 180. From October 2002 to August 2004 she commanded the Surface Deployment and Distribution Command. In September 2004 she was assigned as the Commanding General of the United States Army Combined Arms Support Command and Fort Lee.
I'm thinking she's been there, done that.
See! See! All it took was a woman brave enough to run for president and shatter the glass ceiling into 18 million shards that allowed this to happen.
Wait for the spin and someone in Senator, Miz Bubbas camp to make this claim.
Kudos, regardless, to General Dunwoody.
Making 4 Stars is a an achievement in and of itself, regardless. Even for He Who Shall Not Be Named, the POD.
huzzah!
(interesting cropping on the photo provided; deprives the casual observer of any glance at her right side shoulder sleeve...)
(which is strange, since apparently she has some kind of patchy looking thing that one can see in other photos elswhere...)
You have given a tremendous sacrifice for our country. Thank you for protecting us. Great Job.
I thought it was a good crack in the ceiling when my MI Advanced Course classmate became DCSINT and LTG Kennedy.
