Open post for those with something to share, updated through the day. New, complete posts come in below this one. Note: If trackbacking, please acknowledge this post in your post. That's only polite. You're advertising here, we should get an ad at your place... Time to add a new caveat, because from email it's not clear to some folks (mind you, if you don't read this it won't matter...) Being an open post, people (collectively, the Denizens) other than I post in the H&I. They sign their work (most of the time) - keep that in mind when you want...

Somewhat confused on the Canadian VC issue. Australia has their own system of decorations, but (as I understand it) they are also allowed to recommend for Commonwealth Awards, such as the VC. As I understand it, the problem with the Commonwealth awards is that they are strictly rationed on a quota basis, and all sorts of mundane issues can get dredged up. By the way, I am a US vet who served with Aussies in Vietnam, two of whom won the Victoria Cross, but only one of whom I actually met (Rayenne Simpson) prior to his award. I did fly down to Townsville, QLD, on 12 Feb 06 to see WO1 (Ret) Barry Tolley receive a long overdue Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device for his actions as a platoon commander at Duc Lap in August 1968. Talk about a delay in getting an award! Anyway, perhaps some of our "Canayen" brothers can enlighten us on Canada's attitude towards Commonwealth awards.

Je me souviens!

I hadda think about that one, JTG.

Well, when we *fired* a long-service federal bureaucrat for using the word "niggardly" because the feelings of illiterate drama queens are more important...

Wife is a HUGE Dam Busters fan. While in the Neatherlands back in the early '90's, we went down to the village where Gibson and his co-pilot are buried. It's a train ride and bus ride south of Rotterdam. The gravesite is well tended and flowers placed on it regularly. We also talked briefly with the housekeeper who takes care of the priest who actually spoke at Gibsons' interrment. Very old man still living at the church where he had been the priest during WWII and after.

On the Dambusters thing; why are we no longer allowed to speak the name of Guy Gibson's dog?

(It's been censored from recent versions of the movie, too.)

Hunter, you are coming dangerously close to having somebody start an article about you on Encyclopedia Dramatica.

Trust me, Sir, you don't want that.

The chaotic neutrals and /b/tards will come up out of their holes and mess with _anybody_ who shows the smallest bit of vulnerability.

Oh, BTW, do you liek Mudkipz?

The US Military has an agreement with Canada to us the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Halifax if wounded troops returning home require immediate medical help on the way to the US. I'd say this poor fellow had complications arise and they diverted to Halifax,
