Time to add a new caveat, because from email it's not clear to some folks (mind you, if you don't read this it won't matter...) Being an open post, people (collectively, the Denizens) other than I post in the H&I. They sign their work (most of the time) - keep that in mind when you want to flame someone in email please - if it doesn't say "The Armorer" or "John" then I didn't write it! And honestly - if you don't like something said or posted... leave a comment, and hash it out (within the context of The Rulez which are clearly posted on the comment form, I would add).

I'm thinking the best thing about this picture are the hortator's ears...

I suppose it's apt, really - given that the voice of those ears debuted as a steamboat captain... -the Armorer

Hedy Lamarr - more than a pretty face.

Leaving aside the total merits of the argument (read 'em both, make your own judgements) I'm with Jason in his opinion of the political class. We disagree on who represents a solution (Jason is an Obama fan, I want a new slate of options...) -the Armorer

Cameras on police officer handguns? As long as they don't interfere with draw and use, I don't see a huge downside. If they weren't so expensive, I'd consider one for training, too - one that integrated a laser. You could do a pretty good shooter analysis watching the laser dance - especially on trigger-pull. H/t, Kevin G. -the Armorer

Speaking of stuff from Kevin - I'm thinking that if this womyn wants to play "Who's got the strongest grip?" when shaking hands - let her win, don't make her win. -the Armorer

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.

Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.

Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*

The UAVs we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.

I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to that particular topic. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone".

        Barb-
The home office of my company is located in Portland, OR. The company newsletter that came out this week had an article about our dragon boat team.
Until that article, I'd never heard of a dragon boat race- and now I know someone who's done it! SWEEEEEEET!

Whoa! That's one BIG Dragon Boat! I was part of a Dragon Boat team several years ago - ours only had 22 crew. Getting 20 geeks to paddle in sync with one another - That was a hoot :-)

re: Hedy Lamarr. i have heard that her mind was a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives, and that it was aglow with whirling, transient nodes of thought careening through a cosmic vapor of invention.

(or was that Hedley?)

        Re cameras on weapons:

I expect we'll eventually see packages (if they aren't already available,) which combine a white LED torch, a colored aiming laser, and a camera into a single widget that fits on the mounting rails now being included on many pistol frames nd doesn't upset the handling characteristics of the pistol all that much..

I agree about the utility of lasers as teaching tools for pistol: when I was a drill sergeant doing 19K (M1/M1A1/M1A2 Tank Crewman) OSUT at Fort Knox, we had an amazing increase in first-try qualifications with the M9 after we brought in some laser-based training aids that let us give feedback on steady hold, trigger pull, and sight alignment without burning up real ammo. Heck we even had one kid who came to us never having fired a weapon in his life, and was left-handed and right-eye-dominant, who missed scoring Expert by one round. Before the laser toys, we'd have been lucky to have gotten him qualified at all on the first pass.
