<p>Remember the *1st* Iwo Jima flag raising?  <a href="http://www.iwojima.com/raising/raisingb.htm">The one Joe Rosenthal *didn't* get a picture of</a>?  Nothing bad against Joe - <strong><a href="http://www.iwojima.com/raising/lflaga2.gif">he got the best one that day</a></strong>, no argument!</p>

<p><strong><a href="http://carol_fus.tripod.com/marines_hero_ray_jacobs.html">Private First Class Ray Jacobs</a></strong> was one of those flag-raisers. He didn't make it into the pictures.  They were kind of busy, taking the island and all.  They had other things on their mind, I'm guessing.</p>

<p>He died today.</p>

<p>The media hasn't noticed, yet.  But we'll make sure they do.</p>

        Came here from National Review Online.  Thanks for posting this.  Uncommon valor truly was a common attribute on that island.  These men, their comrades, and those who went before, came after, or serve today are truly owed a debt that can never be repaid.

        <![CDATA[I met Ray August of 2006 at the 57th reunion of the Iwo survivors.  I can not believe he has passed away.  He seemed like a man in his mid 50s.  Those Marines can fool ya!  God Bless all of our troops. You are all heroes.

        ...well, at least the local media noticed last night...in, of all places, the SF Bay Area (Oakland, actually). He was an opinion broadcaster on KTVU TV for many years up until 1992. Today, they wouldn&apos;t let him any where near a microphone. Too American for this town!
