Open post for those with something to share, updated through the day. New, complete posts come in below this one. Note: If trackbacking, please acknowledge this post in your post. That's only polite. You're advertising here, we should get an ad at your place... Time to add a new caveat, because from email it's not clear to some folks (mind you, if you don't read this it won't matter...) Being an open post, people (collectively, the Denizens) other than I post in the H&I. They sign their work (most of the time) - keep that in mind when you want...

Algore got his peace prize? Wonder how much of it he spent on his electric bill...

I have a question for Ry 'cause he is the Castle Alchemist and I need an answer about a Food Grade ingredient: I need food grade glycerin.

Which letter goes in front of it and what is the difference between industrial glycerin and food grade?

Why do I need glycerin? It makes better almond paste and marzipan. Corn syrup is too sticky.
I also make cough syrup out of wild cherry bark
and glycerin is a better sweetener and stabilizer than honey or corn syrup...

I can't get glycerin in the local pharmacies anymore, and I don't wanna make things that go b00m.

Sigh.

As you huddle around your hearth shivvering and peering out at the ice crusted estate, just remember:

It's all the result of global warming.

After all, Al Gore got his Nobel Prize yesterday, so it must be true.

Looks very much like my house did last February during our ice storm. Things were frozen over for a week, and we had no power for 4 days. Cold.As.$hit. good luck, John & Beth

Don't forget, John, that your free-speech legal provisions are much, MUCH stronger than ours, especially for folks in uniform up here. Which is why The Torch still leads the pack north of the border - not because we're particularly strong, just because we have the field much to ourselves.

And because we have a much smaller military community overall, this sort of crap doesn't have the same political ramifications up here as it would in the U.S. There's no great military bloc of votes to gain or lose when you're only sixty-some-odd-thousand strong.

I'm concerned that the mandarins see the CF as having gotten too big for its britches, especially with Gen Hillier's candour and popularity, and they're willing to ride out a short-term sh*tstorm in the media in order to rein the CF back in long-term.

I think that's dangerous and ultimately counterproductive for the Canadian people, who already have too weak a connection with the men and women who protect them and their interests worldwide. When the public doesn't know the military, it's pretty hard to support that military when the politicians screw things up (which they always do, eventually).

I'm concerned about this, and I'm worried the story won't have any legs.

Drove from Santa Rosa, NM to Wichita(home) yesterday. Liberal to Wichita on 54 had it's moments. I had to stop and knock ice off the wiper springs. They would freeze and not flex. This in 30-31 degrees with freezing drizzle/rain. Out the window this morning, ICE in ICT.
