The transcript of the remarks of Secretary Gates' Landon Lecture at KState.

Landon Lecture Remarks as Delivered by Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, Manhattan, Kansas, Monday, November 26, 2007 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Acknowledgements] It is both an honor and a pleasure to be part of the Landon Lecture series – a forum that has for more than four decades has hosted some of America’s leading intellectuals and statesmen. Considering that, I at first wondered if the invitation was in fact meant for Bill Gates. It is a pleasure to get out of Washington, D.C., for a little while. I left Washington in 1994, and I was certain, and very happy, that it...

Well, with finals coming up meaning that I have to be on campus for tutoring cash (where Mizz Thang gets to gloat over the death of my project and my prospects of becoming Dr. Gollum along with it), it's cold(meaning my knee swells up like a motha--not all of us were invincible and invulnerable in HS, Sir Buckethead), and The Wife is going out of town at weeks end(and I'm not invited since it's a biology dept thing) I think I'm entitled to a little bitterness. ;)

But mostly, I didn't think I was being that bitter. I wrote that in the same mood I'm usually in, at least I think I was in a decent mood. I've seen the blueprint for it. Saw it in '03 when the book was published. Going on 5 years now and there's still resistance by the Paul-ites and the anti-globalismists, with the pressure they're able to bring? ai yah. That's not bitterness, that's calling it like it is.

heh. More than just re-invigorating the Peace Corps. We need more than a bunch of liberal arts majors who tend to be favorable to Marxism and Liberation Theology to go out and 'help' by teaching about good nutrition, sanitation, and basically pissing people off with 'cultural imperialism' that the PC was a major element of. Get me the Army doc who signed on with JTF-HOA(and Barnett spotlighted a few months back). That dude has the right 'tude for this, and he's not that rare an occurance.

We already have the blueprints for this, just not the will in the PTB to make it happen. To do that would gore someone's sacred cow(tax cuts, or scaling back SocSec payments or adding means testing, or free headstart for everyone, or some such other 'necessity' some 'Causehead' asserts.) that it gets shut down and hard. Jonah may like gridlock but sometimes it simply sucks @55.

                Re-invigorate the peace corps.

One problem I see is that we have moved towards "privatization" of many aspects of our international involvement with the many NGOs that often refuse to make any announcement of US involvement or explicitly say that they are not to be recognized as part of the US. Which has its good and bad points. We should evaluate what NGOs we are giving funding to and make sure they are actually working and effective to meet the goals that we have set in development.
