H&I* Fires, 21 NOV 2007

Open post for those with something to share, updated through the day. New, complete posts come in below this one. Note: If trackbacking, please acknowledge this post in your post. That's only polite.

You're advertising here, we should get an ad at your place...

Time to add a new caveat, because from email it's not clear to some folks (mind you, if you don't read this it won't matter...) Being an open post, people (collectively, the Denizens) other than I post in the H&I. They sign their work (most of the time) - keep that in mind when you want to flame someone in email please - if it doesn't say "The Armorer" or "John" then I didn't write it! And honestly - if you don't like something said or posted... leave a comment, and hash it out (within the context of The Rulez which are clearly posted on the comment form, I would add).

This is an interesting essay from FPRI on the importance of not pretending war will go away and the necessity of studying it.

There’s a line in there that might throw a few. The one about WW1 being the ‘chemists war.’ That’s a reference to the Haber process which allowed Germany to produce explosives and gunpowder despite losing access to the S. American saltpeter mines upon which it was otherwise completely dependent for nitrates. No nitrates, back then, then no boom. Okay, I’ve been sufficiently geeky today, where’s the chee-tos?

It's been a while since I contributed. Mostly because work has kept me hectic, College Football season is here, and work has kept me hectic.

That being said I thought I would take a moment to combine 3 of my favorite things. College Football, My semi-Alma mater (I dropped out after 2 years to join the Army), and MilBlogging.

Complete with pictures, I wish to show you just Why They call Us the "Volunteers"

Catch ya on the flip side! :)

In re: Huckabee's rise. An official at the White House told me they believe that Huckabee will be the Republican nominee. A Democrat operative I talked to said that the White House has been pushing that line for some time. Heh. Interesting, regardless.

Patrick Lasswell as some good stuff to peruse...

1. Good, sharp, troops are a better deal than having a buncha troops just to have a buncha troops. True enough, as long as you aren't fighting a big war.

2. On the otter heiney... if you *have* good troops, you shouldn't waste and dilute 'em.

Over at Brainshavings... a good look at the 2nd Amendment and the meaning of "arms." it's from March, based on a Newt Gingrich interivew on Hugh Hewitt... but it's relevant to the Supremes taking up the DC Gun Ban case. Hugh took some heat... Publicola takes Newt to task on the issue. -the Armorer

Heh. Re: Bloodspite's entry above - someone takes their football seriously. Not that my Tigers aren't going to pluck the Chickenhawks and send 'em down in flames... -the Armorer

Well, the PTSD conversation goes on and the more it goes on with apparently the great and vaunted Andrew Sullivan taking a swipe at Blackfive over their posting. Andrew apparently missed the whole "let's get over the politics and take away the stigma" part of the conversation. - Kat

And, late in the day, as I predicted: Beowulf is kicking everybody's butt while Redacted languishes in 50th place. Prurient interest of teenage boys? Nudity? Violence? Great graphics? Unambiguous hero? Maybe we're all just philistine, fly over country, red staters at heart? - Kat [oops...via Instapundit]

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.

Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.

*Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*

The UAVs (oops, can't call 'em UAVs anymore - they're now Unmanned Aerial Systems... some Colonel got his Legion of Merit for that change...), er, um UAS's we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.

I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to. It's also an open trackback, so if someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone"

Yeah we're pretty serious. I should have taken a picture of my revenge. A Giant Orange Pinnacle in the breakroom, with "Go Vols 34-14. BBQ Anyone?" written in White in the circle around it instead of latin mumbojumbo. A 3 ft stuffed Razorback mascot disected and covered with BBQ Sauce in the center of it, and tied down with Orange and white streamers. I had to come to work 2 hours early to get it done :)

Sullivan. The sad decline of a once fine writer. BDS at it's extreme. The whole discussion over at B5 shows just how hard it is to get wrapped around this issue.

yes. natural. not natural. illness. not illness. crazy. not crazy. We don't really understand it so it is difficult to accept what it is or the various permutations that either make it "natural instinct" or "illness". Frankly, like I said, I'm just happy some folks are talking about it and it may eventually lead to better understanding that creates a better support system and treatment that reduces these events to about nil.

Yeah. Sullivan. I used to read him regularly, before he ....... well, I don't know what happened, exactly. It's like he almost did a 180, and became something he wasn't. Or stopped pretending, and reverted to whatever he truly was.

Yes, please do beat Kansas. That will help my West Virginia Mounties!!!!!

Happy to oblige, John, happy to oblige.

Watching the trailer was enough for me to decide not to see Beowolf. Hollwierd loves to kill any decent story it can get it's hands on. Now, if you want to see a really good (and highly authentic) movie, see if you can find a copy of "Outlaw". This was the first feature-length movie filmed in Iceland and is based upon Gisli's Saga. This was written at about the same time as Beowolf, and is chocked full of revenge, feuding, murder, and irony - only is is incredibly authentic

Ry, about that line "WW1 was the chemists' war," -- when I read that, the first thing I think of was not nitrates, but poison gas. WW1 was the first major conflict in which gas played a role.

Wolfwalker True enough, but Dr Haber's work on poison gases was a consequence of his work on nitrates. Cheers
