H&I Fires 19 NOV 2007

Open post for those with something to share, updated through the day. New, complete posts come in below this one. Note: If trackbacking, please acknowledge this post in your post. That's only polite.

You're advertising here, we should get an ad at your place...

Time to add a new caveat, because from email it's not clear to some folks (mind you, if you don't read this it won't matter...) Being an open post, people (collectively, the Denizens) other than I post in the H&I. They sign their work (most of the time) - keep that in mind when you want to flame someone in email please - if it doesn't say "The Armorer" or "John" then I didn't write it! And honestly - if you don't like something said or posted... leave a comment, and hash it out (within the context of The Rulez which are clearly posted on the comment form, I would add).

The MSM good news from Iraq is coming fast and furious. This time around it's Newsweek: Baghdad Comes Alive. And the NYT joins in the upbeat tone, though in typical NYT style: U.S. Says Attacks in Iraq Fell to the Level of Feb. 2006. And yes, that date is significant.

Pop Quiz--Who is being "channeled' in the following? It's not who you think:

We're floundering in a quagmire in Iraq. Our strategy is flawed, and it's too late to change it. Our resources have been squandered, our best people killed, we're hated by the natives and our reputation around the world is circling the drain. We must withdraw.

Note, Greyhawk himself makes an appearance in the column quoted above.

But not all the news is good. AQ is targeting children. Again. - FbL

Submarine Maintenance, Scandinavian-style... (I think that's a Nordic language being spoken there...) Who knew that submariners were the tankers-of-the-sea? -the Armorer

Gimme summora dis!

I just had to write, great site...and I aint'a Redleg.

11C what I be....10th MTN, 81MM and a familiarity with the "wee 60" in the late 80's early 90's.

I stumbled upon the castle whilst searching for a "sour kraut" T-shirt as a gag X-mas gift.
Still not sure why it hit, but I have just spent 3 hours of quality time on your sight.

Thanks again for totally useless info on Frog artey and really cool pixs of militaria.

Even if I used to sit with my MBC in hand, hand mike in my ear and hear all the fire missions go to the 105's...our bigger brothers. We apparently share an appreciation for the smell of powder bags and CLP.

Ernie

Heh. Wonder if I should reopen the store and sell "sour kraut" t-shirts? I was born there and lived there over a decade, it's not like I don't have some cred in the subject... -the Armorer

Let's take a look at what other Milbloggers are saying - in ways the caught the Army's eye (via Stand-To).

American Ranger - on Thanksgiving, and the Sunni-Shi'a divide.

Over at The Tension, Combat Camera in action.

Over at Knee Deep in the Hooah, an Army Wife and Mother sees her son home from the sandbox. -the Armorer

There are proxy wars and then there are proxy wars. Wonder if this one will have the same outcome of the last proxy war with Russia in a far off place where we eventually had to go into to destroy the after effects?

Our allies in Canada continue to sacrifice with us in Afghanistan: [redacted the original meaning - see post below - kat]

Another allied blog from England: Briefings from Walsingham

An interesting piece on Iran in relationship to previous posts: Is rising oil prices trumping sanctions?

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.

Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.

*Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*

The UAVs (oops, can't call 'em UAVs anymore - they're now Unmanned Aerial Systems... some Colonel got his Legion of Merit for that change...), er, um UAS's we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.

I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to. It's also an open trackback, so if someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone"

Norwegian?? sounded like two Cockneys, a Cornwall and a Welshman mocking a Scot.

Something was caught in the back of their throats, anyway!

Don't forget it's Christmas season. Send something to the Sandbox. Perhaps you have someone you know and that's great. If you don't Sam recommends this Marine 1st Sgt who is asking for his troops ... the ones who come from broken homes ... and who never get mail. Here is what he says at Any Marine "From the Marine: 15 Nov 2007: The Marines are doing well out here and really do appreciate all the packages that have been sent. They really enjoyed the magazines and the female Marines were extremely happy with the female care packages and magazines. The entire Marines share all the DVD's and CD's that was sent in their off time. The items requested for have been great however, the Marines are constantly running mission after mission and do need items that will keep them warm this winter such as glove liners, ski masks (Preferably tan or desert color), hand warmers, canned food items and easy to pack snacks, dri-fit wear long sleeve shirts, and female hygiene items. I would like to see the Marines get some Holiday gifts, because I do have some Marines with broken homes and are not receiving gifts or letters. I give them some of the packages or take things out of a few packages and make up a package and then give it those Marines that are not getting mail. So, if you can remember those Marines in your hearts for this holiday season to show them people out there do care about them and what they do! 1stSgt Lightle" Or find a Soldier or Sailor or Airman ... it gets cold there around the holidays. Remember them and s***w Seitor Reid. H/T to the rulz.

11C....that was my *midlife crisis*. Picked up the MOS at age 44 at Benning during a somewhat misguided attempt at Army Reserve service/last shot at 20 years before age 60..... But then.....that's a whole 'nuther story, and even with 3 years in FRG, I never could eat kraut. VN + 37 barely allows for roast beef or rice. We're anxiously awaiting word that #2 Son is headed home from Afganistan in the next week or so.......believe me, it's easier being there than having a kid there. This one was a little easier than his first two laps in Iraq, though.
