"Mr. Tuttle, what could cause a plane to crash into a skyscraper?" We were sitting on the loading ramp of the clothing issue point at Fort Dix, waiting for the facility to open so we could draw our two dufflebag-loads of deployment gear. Fifteen officers and enlisted -- Jersey's contribution to the 29th Infantry Division and SFOR-10 -- feet dangling off the edge of the dock, everyone Bosnia-bound, and everyone asking the Deployment Subject Matter Expert -- me -- what to bring in addition to what we knew would be issued. Then came the airplane question from one of the...

I've never heard you tell this story before, Bill. That says a lot, considering how much we talk.
I'm glad you were there, ready to go, when Bush opened that can o' whupass. There's no one in this world I'd rather have overhead when the shee-ite hits the fan.

12 hours after the first plane hit I was in a National Guard convoy to Ground Zero.

Spent the next 5 weeks climbing rubble and sucking down dust.

While I agree we should never forget nor forgive, sometimes I'd rather.

i watched from mid-town, saw the second plane go in.

called the Reserve Center, told them to break open the arms room and put an armed guard on the bldg.

RIP: FDNY Ron Bucca, and FDNY Danny Suhr.

This, like some other terrible events, are remembered despite being something one can never cherish and hold easily, so as to not forget the stark reality of it and the things that follow. These decent people died for no good reason. It tells us to end it.

To all of those lost on 9/11:

May you rest in peace and never be forgotten, and may your families and friends find a way to cope with your loss and continue their lives as best they can in your absence.

To the rest of us:

Let us always remember the tragedy and barbarity of that day, so that we can channel our anger and fear into renewed vigilence against the threats we face.

Let us resolve ourselves to continue our eternal pursuit of peace where possible, and let us never fail to use swift and overwhelming action against those who would do us harm.
