**********************************

Over at Cogito Ergo Geek, we find this interesting take on the DC's appeal of the overturning of their gun ban.

The context of the appeal was reminiscent of throwing the baby from the Troika to distract the pursuing wolves. They seemed willing to concede that long guns were acceptable as self-defense weapons, but having made that concession they argued that it was not necessary for citizens to resort to handguns for the same purpose.

If you are interested in 2nd Amendment Law, you should drop by and read the bit, and if you're *really* interested in 2A law, you should click through on many of his links, too - you lazy weasels who don't click the links we lovingly insert!

Moving along... it would appear that we milbloggers were just the early swell of a wave of Presidential sitting and chatting with people. Yesterday it was conservative journalists. Kathryn Lopez and Kate O'Beirne report out here. It appears that K-Lo and Kate elicited the same response among their peers of the left as we did among ours. Andrew Sullivan was not impressed with their meet, like Markos Zuniga was not impressed with ours. Strike that - Markos didn't descend into obscenity to make his point. Sullivan did. Gad, it's sad to see how Sullivan's anger has consumed him. Back when we started, we dreamed of a link from him, and we sent him money during his fundraisers. Then we just drifted apart... On the upside, not being a member of "we few, we happy few, we band of brothers" who are Presidential Sycophants seems to have gotten the Blogfather's knickers just a teeny bit twisty...

While on the NRO kick... Mark Steyn has a follow-up on the consequences of running afoul of a very small minded man. -the Armorer

It looks like Bill cleared Pakistan just in time. Al Qaeda just declared war on Musharraf. Sounds to me like that makes it easier for Musharraf, but I don't pretend to understand the politics of that region. -the Armorer

In re: Rather's Lawsuit. I love this gem from NRO:

Rather v. CBS [Byron York]

A reader catches the delicious possibility of what will happen if the Dan Rather lawsuit actually makes it to trial:

Won't this put CBS in the position of proving that the documents in question are in fact bogus? If that is true, the irony is a beautiful thing to behold.

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.

Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.

*Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*

The UAVs (oops, can't call 'em UAVs anymore - they're now Unmanned Aerial Systems... some Colonel got his Legion of Merit for that change...), er, um UAS's we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.

I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to. It's also an open trackback, so if someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone"

I am not going to leave the entire site up.

But I think I will leave at least some of the best posts up. There are a few I think deserve to stay up there - the tributes to fallen heroes, for instance. And some where I managed to make sense.

But there is also a lot of nonsense that I am going to take down. It will take me a while, though :) So, read away!

OK, I clicked on all of those links, as ordered (and I must say yer about the only person I'd take that kind of order from, and maybe IRL) and skimmed&sortaread them.

I *am* interested in 2nd Amendment law, because I do believe that the folks who want to ban the Evil Black Rifles will soon afterwards come for my Bedside Revolver.

Besides, I got to put 5 rounds through an Evil Black Rifle once, at a Friends of the NRA event, and my response was like, "Did it fire?"

(I had just been shooting my .45 revolver, which may have de-sensitized me.)

Neither do most Paks under the age of thirty -- it takes them that long just to sort out all the political parties, alliances and personalities.

State Department instruction to Yours Truly: Do *NOT* discuss politics or religion.

My comment: The SD brief was PC-driven to preclude "giving offense to the children." My understanding of the situation over there would be exactly zip if I hadn't disregarded that bit of advice. The Paks love discussing both (keep it dispassionate, alternate buying the tea and cookies, and don't get vehement -- it's impolite to yell) and didn't have any heartburn with yours truly being a Crusader Myrmidon.

And don't mistake a Pak getting close as an attempt to get in your face -- it's the normal way they carry on a conversation.
