So, how do I know when my blogiversary is? When the emails start coming in saying, "Hey! Where's the Castle!?! It's gone and there's some goofy page in it's place!"
Yep, that means it's Castle Argghhh!'s blogoversary on Hosting Matters. They've been very good to us here at the Castle, but they have this lingering inability to get our domain registration taken care of - this is the third chance they've had to get it right, and it's the third time it hasn't happened.
I opened a ticket that said,
"Hey, did you guys renew my domain registration? It's looking like you didn't..."
To which the inimitable Quinn responded:
We're having some issues with our registrar lately. Getting them to display a full and complete list of domains that are in need of renewal is one of them. We're working to remove that step from the process since they [deleted to protect the innocent].The domain has been manually renewed, it'll be resolving again within moments.
To which I responded...
This being the third year in a row its happened, I just assumed it was your guys way of saying "Happy Anniversary!"It being the third time it's happened is also why I didn't panic, like I did the first time!
I had visions, that first time, of someone squatting on it and me having to pony up bucks to buy it back.
Quinn shot back:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes, we love to show our appreciation by taking a client's site down. :) Ticking the domain over to autorenew in our billing system will ensure it throws us a specific notice next year, in addition to generating an invoice.
I'm not throwing this up here to embarrass Hosting Matters - like I said, they've been good to us, and I like their customer service people, and their service. I threw this up there so you can see what it's like to run a blog that isn't autohosted by the various services like TypePad and Blogspot, etc, where you're a subdomain of theirs. Besides, like I said - it's a blogiversary, who wants to get all angsty? -the Armorer

While I don't agree with exactly *everything* in this list about real Army Leaders (you'll know it when you read it) there's still a Colonel [sic] of truth in it. Especially the tanker and aviator bits. The artillery stuff is a canard. -the Armorer

Frankly, I never could figure out what all the angst was about with Greenspan's remarks vis-a-vis the Iraq war being "largely about oil." He was forced to re-trench his statement, but Classical Values points out the fact that, yes, indeed, it was about oil and always has been.
And then there is this *alarming* report stating that Iran has missiles aimed at US targets inside Iraq and, of course, Israel. It's the same report that they've been making for several years now, so I'm not sure why anyone is, well, so alarmed. It doesn't really change the paradigm of how war would be fought with Iran since it's already factored in, if war there be.
I'm working on the internal Iranian situation right now. Something interesting is happening, though, that ought to give some folks a little pause on what the Iranian's intend, Abizaid's recent statements about what the world can accept with Iran not withstanding.
On the Western Hemisphere, Chavez continues his own consolidation of power by turning Venezuelan schools into re-education camps and, continuing to look more and more like that every other dictator, dumping on the people that brought him to power. The people who cheated, stole, lied and intimidated people on the street in order to insure Chavez's election and then did the same again to insure that all of his most unconstitutional laws were passed through the assembly, are now apparently not revolutionary enough. Daniel down in Venezuela just laughed and said they deserved what they were getting. Apparently, after doing everything they could to get this government and its corresponding dictator, they found some line they didn't want to cross. Daniel invokes Neimoller: First they came...

For another take on the visit with the President, Concrete Bob has posted CJ's email on the subject over at DC Protest Warriors. I'm still amazed, big as I am, that CJ managed to miss me... ;^ ) -the Amorer

Chuck Simmins on the Netherlands honoring an American soldier. The Dutch have honored a soldier from the 82nd for his courage in going to the aid of a Dutch soldier in Afghanistan. Sgt. Alexander Van Aalten was killed in the effort, and Chuck brings that story to light - as it should be. -the Armorer

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.
Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.
*Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*
The UAVs (oops, can't call 'em UAVs anymore - they're now Unmanned Aerial Systems... some Colonel got his Legion of Merit for that change...), er, um UAS's we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.
I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to. It's also an open trackback, so if someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone"
