I'm *very* busy right now - helping other people get work (the Curse of the Contractor) just as other people just landed me new work doing something completely different from what I was doing before. Plus, I'm helping a colleague get the analysis plan for a major Army experiment wired into place, doing prep work before I get to take a month and go across the Chattahoochee and up the Upatoi to play at being a Fire Support Coordinator for a different Army event - and I have a Command Performance coming up on Friday, for which I have to depart tomorrow, for which there is a preparatory telecon tomorrow morning, and the Vault Door of Argghhh! just arrived in Kansas and they want to deliver it tomorrow, and my muscle is going to be required along with my contractor's guys to get this thing schlepped from the truck to the doorway. Meaning I'll be trying to listen in on a telcon while at the same time straining with 5 other guys to manhandle a 750 pound load. So, posting might be a touch erratic. But I should have interesting news by this weekend.
Fuzzybear Lioness pointed me to Lex's 9/11 musings yesterday, which are well worth the read, especially for those among us who are approaching retirement decision points in service. When I put my papers in, my branch tried to get me to stay on longer, but they didn't offer much more than continue to be "ridden hard and put up wet" to advance other people's careers. They really tried to talk me into staying on for another 18-24 months. I retired in April of 2000. I wish I had taken their advice, now. Of course, I didn't know then what we know now about what was going to happen. Neither did Lex. But his timing was better than mine. -the Armorer

Holy Schnikees!
Putin has basically set himself up to be neo-emperor of Russia with this move. That's sure to change the threat board some. I guess we shake hands with bastiches in places other than the ME too.

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.
Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.
*Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*
The UAVs (oops, can't call 'em UAVs anymore - they're now Unmanned Aerial Systems... some Colonel got his Legion of Merit for that change...), er, um UAS's we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.
I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to. It's also an open trackback, so if someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone"
