First up, Murray the Kiwi made a comment on this post yesterday, that should be up here today. The context was the message from Governor Sebelius of Kansas, in her proclamation that flags should fly at half-staff today - wherein she displays that sometimes-maddening-to-foreigners insularity of 'Muricans:
With all due respect 3,000 Americans were not killed on Sept 11.The citizens of over 80 nations were killed that day, most of them Americans.
They attacked ALL of us. To pretend otherwise is do the enemys job for them.
Good point, well made. Unusual for a tanker, that.

Speaking of furriners who sometimes shake their head exasperatedly at their fellow-continental dwellers... Damian sent me this on Saturday, and I told him I would hold off until the week, since it deserves a higher-traffic day.
"...there's been a fairly controversial article calling the decisions of one of our generals into question during the big battles in Kandahar last year (Op Medusa), and I actually got a chance to interview the general in question face-to-face on Friday afternoon. "
Some background from prior to the interview: click here.
The post resulting from the interview itself: click here.
I guess this sort of thing is part of what they pay the generals the big bucks for...
No no, Damian! They're paid to lie to the legislature! Just ask Congressman Lantos! -the Armorer

The Ghost of a Flea sends us to Vodkapundit, where we find my Gun Dogs are getting dissed! I sallied forth in the comments to defend my brethren. No doubt that will inspire CAPT H and Murray to counterattack. Better ruck up, Frank! -the Armorer

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.
Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.
*Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*
The UAVs (oops, can't call 'em UAVs anymore - they're now Unmanned Aerial Systems... some Colonel got his Legion of Merit for that change...), er, um UAS's we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.
I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to. It's also an open trackback, so if someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone"
