John Hawkins over at Right Wing News has another right-of-center blogger poll up: Right-Of-Center Bloggers Select The Most & Least Desired 2008 Republican Nominee (Third Quarter Of 2007 Edition) Ron Paul, your office is calling. I would say that I'm in the pack on this one.

CAPT H sent along this link to an interesting discussion of small arms ammuntion development, from a Brit perspective.

Speaking of things historical - we can't, and shouldn't, try to preserve every ship and tank and airplane that played a role in actual wartime operations. It's simply too expensive. So we have to cherry-pick the ones we try to save. One of the ones we tried to save, and actually re-purpose as a part of Operation Enduring Service, was the USS Orion, a sub-tender. We were unsuccessful in that effort - and this is the sad ending of a fine ship. That said - she may well be a coupla HMMWVs, Corvettes, and part of a Stryker or three... or mebbe just some nails that hold your next house together. -the Armorer

Bob Owens closes the door on Private Beauchamp's Big Adventure in fabulist journalism. Heh. I predict that Private Beauchamp will open his mouth and do an Igli on himself. Those who know, read Heinlein. -the Armorer

Hmmmm. Mebbe we should try this around here... for Politicians, Cops, Ward Churchill, fabulist writers... -the Armorer

You'll notice YouTube will ask you to click an "I'm over 18, no honest" button to view this video. YouTube states that this in no way waives the policy that porn, violence and hate speech are are grounds for deletion. If they're going to take down porn, they can take down this. Thanks. - Rickbert

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.

Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.

*Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*

The UAVs (oops, can't call 'em UAVs anymore - they're now Unmanned Aerial Systems... some Colonel got his Legion of Merit for that change...), er, um UAS's we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.

I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to. It's also an open trackback, so if someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone"

"H&I" is legitimate usage when discussing what your bombardment allowance is, but actual targets and fire missions are harassment or interdiction, not both. At least they were at K-Bay when I was the bull NGLO there.

Ed 1. You are probably correct but Nuance is involved. 2. I suppose you also associate "precision", "location" and "target" according to usual Artillery norms. 3. Indirect Fire lacks personal commitment. Cheers

Ed, while I see your point - from the perspective of the target, it's same-o same-o. And Heinrichs finally responds to my jabs of this last week.

And speaking of H&I fires Boyda took some from the KC Star today. A Kansas congresswoman could be the poster face for delirious dubiosity. Clifford D. May Published: August 06, 2007 "The freshman congresswoman was so distressed by these remarks that she got up and walked out. There was "only so much" she could take, she explained, so she "had to leave the room ... after so much of the frustration of having to listen to what we listened to." She said she was worried, too, that Keane's remarks "will in fact show up in the media and further divide this country." Hey, that could happen! Lucky for Boyda, this month Congress goes on vacation. One hopes she can rest and recover, while blocking out any unwelcome and divisive news about American military successes in Iraq resulting from the new strategy being pursued by Gen. David Petraeus and his troops." Nothing like setting the standard for liberal outrage on just the wrong thing at just the wrong time. I recommend Careers.com Ms Boyda.

For what its worth Mr. Ron Paul runs as a Republican because the fix is in between the news media and the two major parties. 3rd parties get virtually zero coverage and zero traction. Mr. Paul is in reality a Libertarian. One wonders what would happen if we had a truly open election process?

One wonders what would happen if we had a truly open election process? Stock value of National Tar and Feathers, Inc., would skyrocket, for one thing...

I predict that Private Beauchamp will open his mouth and do an Igli on himself. Personally, I'd rather see him do an Igla on himself. Fly up his own exhaust vent and, when the aerospike tickles his tonsils, the ride's over...

If further substantive information comes to light, TNR will, of course, share it with you. Of course. Just as soon as the first iceberg transits the Suez Canal...

Let’s remember that the new Managing Editor of TNR, Franklin Foer, is the degenerate spawn of one of the farthest left “historians” on the fake-history bash-the-USA academicide front. Papa Foer has won many historical prizes for consistently unmaksing the evils in America, especially during the Reconstruction, and still presides at Columbia U., where “left” means “centrist” and “centrists” don’t exist. Evil Poppa begets evil son who enables evil chronicler. Just connect the dots. No fault on the left, as Mark Rudd told me decades ago when I was a deluded SDS volunteer. He smoked my dope & left me with the advice, "Dare to cheat, dare to win." Could be Columbia U's motto! At least when CSJ hands out Pulitzers!

Scott Thomas Beaucrap doin' an Igli! Major cool image. Which brings me to the small point I'd like to post here... over the years I have noticed that apparently the only people who read Kipling are military ones. Lately I have been seeing Heinlein quotes and references coming from miltypes, and confused looks when I mention RAH tidbits from the civvie SF kids (those under 35 from my standpoint) -- not to mention utter befuddlement when I drop a Kipling line. I am so gratified to see that the living memory of Kipling alive are likely to do the same for Heinlein. Now, how 'bout Donald Hamilton? He passed beyond last November, more's the pity. Here's a quote from his Matt Helm character: "Better a warm, paranoid body than a cold, well-adjusted corpse." THW
