Note: If trackbacking, please acknowledge this post in your post. That's only polite. You're advertising here, we should get an ad at your place... *********************************** I gotta admit, my visceral reaction to reality TV is... "bleah!" And the Kid Nation one, based on the ads, looked to be a new low. Mary Hamm disagrees, and provides a useful example of why one should take care when ranting in the age of Google - especially if you haven't taken the time...

Ry, the Georgia Piedmont accent of my Dad's family can be a bit harsh, I admit. Now my Mom's family's Mississippi accent is such that they can get at least 2.3 syllables into anything a DY would call a syllable.

If you were sentenced to death by a Mississippi judge, you would weep; not at the prospect of imminent death, but from aesthetic admiration for the slow mellifluous and euphonious way he would have said, "...hanged by your neck until you are dead, and may God have mercy on your soul."

I think I may have just figured out how Trent Lott has managed to get away with all he has done. I always liked Haley Barbour better, anyway

Boq, that looks like a pic of a *Canada* goose! I know that they sometimes refuse to go home in the Summer because silly people indulge them (yeah, ethercat, I'm talking about you) but they're not necessarily representative of SC culture.

Can Cap'n H help us out here? With goose recipes? Best goose loads for one's gun?

(I must confess I do, hate stepping in their poo.)

Now, it might be tricky to identify the rectangular states on a map, but my fifth-grade teacher told us, "Nebraska looks like a bus."

Oh, and I do wish that silly bimbo actually talked like a South Carolina girl. She sounded like the most revolting kind of Valley Girl with that California accent she was using.

Made her seem even dumber, y'know?

and i have given names of who SHOULD have been standing alongside him in the docket.

i still lean toward the gov't having tanked the case.

MajMik e- Au contraire - he was accused, he went before a Court, presented his side of the story... and was acquitted of the worst charges, and got tagged on the "saver" the government had larded into it.

Having sat on Courts Martial panels before - if they deliberated for 7 hours, there was a lot of talking, diagramming, dissecting and searching for an answer going on - and it sounds like the government didn't prove it's major case.

Which just goes to show that the possibly the wrong people stood in the dock - and LTC Jordan should have just been slammed in his OERs.

Unlike some officers who got slammed in their OERs, or who got Non-Judicial punishment.

It just further highlights that the chain-of-command was broken at Abu Ghraib, and that LTG Sanchez, who lost his shot at a fourth star, and Colonel Karpinski, who lost her star, failed in their responsibilities, if not to the level of "provable in court negligence."

For the same reason that it's easy to snag little hoods, but not get the Al Capones they work for expcept through tax evasion - the higher up the chain you go in a situation like this, the harder it is to pin a criminal culpability, and the "correction" has to come via professional accountability, and most of the officers involved have suffered in that regard.

Yeah, I think we let senior people skate in ways we shouldn't, but I think in this case, everything was so muddy, we got about the best outcome we could ask for.

Assuming the government just didn't tank it's case.

And we took a far harder look at it than most other militaries in similar situations would have.

The outcome wasn't perfect, but the lesson is there for the future.
