As ever, I always recommend you go to the source, rather than just take some pundit's word for it. Or government official. Or corporate spokesperson. Etc. So, go read the Source Document for today's holiday - The Declaration of Independence. How many among us were required to memorize the preamble? And even to discuss what it meant? My son had to - but I think the Leavenworth school system isn't quite as bound-up in PC multi-culti carp as some others... From Memory, in honor of my teachers and the Founders: IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776. The unanimous Declaration of the...

Email below received today from my son at Combat Outpost Viking, Iraq. He reminds us that on April 19th, before The Declaration of Independence was signed, fighting had begun. The "shot heard round the world" was fired, and the first American blood was shed. "Top of the Rock", son.

"Happy Birthday America

America celebrates 231 years of freedom today, for on July 4th 1776 the Declaration of Independence was signed. Let us not forget the men whose blood made the stripes red. The United states Infantry celebrated its 232nd birthday last month on June 14th. Before there was freedom, there was fighting, and before there was peace, there was war. Remember the sacrificies of those before the 4th and of those long after it. Today we celebrate the birthday of the greatest nation on earth. Even on this alien ground far from my home. The pride overwhelmingly rivets through me as I look upon the colors I proudly wear on my shoulder. I know that I would lay down my life to protect them as so many have before me. I ask you my American brothers and sisters, let us remember the fallen.

NEVER FORGET"

Enjoy the fourth! And thank you, all retirees.
I required my CLUs to learn the Preamble, but they hated it so we did it in sign language.

Next is the Declaration. Didn't the Declaration used to be read in towns across America on the Fourth?

Off to do fireworks. Legal here. Have to round up kitties and other family members to be safe.

Here in rural NZ we do things a little differently than them city folk and US flags out numbered NZ ones in Featherston. (3-2 hey for a tiny town known only for having a steam engine and shooting Japanese POWs its not a bad effort.)

Gives them toffy nosed chardonay slurping city folk something to look at while they speed through town in their BMW's on the way to their tosser life style blocks where they claim to be "living off the land" because they a sheep eating the grass.

                Shipmates & Comrades,

May God bless these United States, and all the peoples who inhabit them. May God give those same peoples the strength required to defend those several states and our great Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and domestic.

To those who cry "Death to America" I say: "Bring it on".

      Respects,

Be safe yourselves, John & Beth. Yes - I had to learn the Preamble in Junior High, but I have not kept up the practice of repeating it as you have, so my hats off to ya!

Happy Independence Day :-)
