Over at The Torch, Damian has an excellent food-for-thought post - that I sent around the .mil email circuit and the house.gov and senate.gov circuit, too. Subject? A study that looked at:

When do militarily powerful states achieve their foreign policy objectives through the use of force? What conditions limit the utility of military force as an instrument of statecraft? Why do strong states lose small wars?

Worth your time to go read Damian's "The Battlefield Between Our Ears."

Heh. This hoser comes to KC for the Heinlein Centennial, and doesn't even drop an email. Sailors, feh!

The M777 get's its baptism of fire in Marine hands... H/t, the Flea.

Hey, All! Just wanted to give you a quick update on Soldiers' Angels in Kansas City. We are working hard to support our troops here. June 30th we were at the Rally in the Alley down in Parkville. Video can also be seen here. . We had a great time and listened to some wonderful music. Then, 4th of July, we knew our men and women in the military didn't get a holiday so we didn't take one either! We hit the parade in the AM and then were invited to do another walk on the field by the KC Minor League Team the T-Bones. It was very exciting! Check out the details on our 4th of July post.

Finally, Saturday we did two welcome home missions with the Patriot Guard. They happened at the same time so I could only do one with the camera. Please check out "Welcome Home Cpl Green USMC". His mom wrote us a lovely letter thanking us for the escort.

Don't forget to stop by the KC Angels Website to keep up with our projects and events or find out about our heroes or check out letters from the front. This Friday we'll be posting an update from LTC Turner who took a quick deter from Iraq over to Afghanistan. So stand by.

A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.

Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.

*Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*

The UAVs (oops, can't call 'em UAVs anymore - they're now Unmanned Aerial Systems... some Colonel got his Legion of Merit for that change...), er, um UAS's we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.

I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to. It's also an open trackback, so if someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone".

ACK! I had *no* idea you were in the area. I *did* make an announcement on my blog, though, so phooey. I would have escaped the convention center habitrail (designed to prevent visitors from escaping and actually spending money in Kansas City) to buy a beer or twelve. ...and holy cow the World War I museum is doing something right! Have y'all reported on it recently?

I figured I was gonna get a burn in return... Haven't reported on the Liberty Memorial since we celebrated the re-opening of it.

I am going there this week I think. I want to check it out.

Might have spoke too soon. Apparently, someone just jumped from the liberty memorial today.
