Representative Boyda's official stand on firearms and firearms laws.

*Not* your average Democrat. Of course, the proof is in the pudding of the votes, but until then, she gets a thumbs-up from this gun owner. Her attitude regarding the "Ugly Gun Ban" (a reference I had to explain to her staffer I was chatting about this letter with) is very good - and not full of any mealy-mouthed hedges. As your representative in Washington, D.C., I approach all gun-related bills with a goal of protecting the right of Kansans to own guns for shooting, hunting, and self-protection. I'm also working to educate my colleagues from urban districts about the...

RD - for her district, she's certainly making the right kinds of moves.

Thus far she hasn't really been tested, either, on votes that will truly show where she stands.

Talking to to her face to face, she comes across as sincere and truly interested, as do her staff.

But aside from the Iraq supplemental, she really hasn't had the chance to show much in terms of tough, binding votes.

Time will tell. Next time around, she'll have a record to run on, and against.

I freely admit I like her - and our differences on Iraq aren't that great - but they are significant.

But then, she hasn't raised my taxes, yet, either, giving me incentive to retire...

I like Representative Boyda's stand for gun rights. Furthermore, I was very impressed with her efforts to require Mexican trucks crossing the border to meet U.S. safety standards. Boyda seems to be the right kind of Democrat.

Thanks for the information. I was pretty sure that it was a voluntary program. This is first time I've heard of it but it sounds like a fair deal. I can understand many private land owners who wouldn't want to allow hunting on their land, but it's encouraging that they're encouraging (not requiring) landowners to open their land to hunting.

Larry - it's a voluntary program - and actually pays the landowner.

See here.

As of now, I don't intend to enroll in it. There are a couple of locals who have hunted the property in the past and I will continue to allow them to do so, at the harvest rate they've been taking in the past.

There are deer, quail, and turkey on the land. There's also a couple of bobcats who wander through, according to the neighbors.

But until I know more about the conservation side of things (game management, etc), and the fact that I will be having the horses out, I want to get a feel for how things go before I do anything like that.

And since it's not land already enrolled in the program, no one can really grumble.

Not that it would matter if they did.

I'm curious about this part of her letter:

Since 1995, Kansas has opened over 1 million acres of private land to public hunting through its WIHA (Walk In Hunting Access) program.

Could someone from Kansas please explain the WIHA program to me? It sounds like they're saying that owners of private property must allow hunting on their land. Somehow, that seems unlikely to me.

Ms. Boyda is a former Republican. I don't recall exactly why she left the fold. Her background brings her to us from the pharma industry, IIRC.

She certainly knows how to play to her district, thus far.

Which isn't a bad thing.
