This is important to get out there.

Earlier this week, I put up a bit in an H&I Fires post about the NRA seeking information about *possible* gun confiscations occuring in Greensburg. I opined then that it was more likely that LEOs were securing loose weapons found during search and rescue operations, and that the weapons were being taken for safe-keeping and would be returned to their owners. I'm a Life Member of the NRA, but I will freely admit the breathless nature of NRA-ILA emails leaves me cold. Something else that leaves me cold is the precipitous way the gun boards will sink, and cling to,...

The NRA is a many-headed group. The shooting-education, perfect, the legal and political representation of gun owners and defense of the Second Amendment, fine.

Then there's the blatant hucksterism which they seem to have copied from AARP. Hawking insurance, no problem, hawking NRA merchandise on an ad-cover of their major magazine, also no problem for them.

Too much hawking, period. I'd wager that they have a VP of hawking, and I'd like to get this man or woman's name so that I can make my complaints about the uncivilized hawking a bit more personal.

Any help?

Actually, I think the best part of this whole story is the number found.

Based on the size of that town and the number of guns just found (not including the ones that were secured already by the owners before the guns were picked up by the LEOs), I would say half that town is armed. And, I would bet, they haven't had a murder, mugging, robbery (not including some bone head kid taking a joy ride with farmer john's john deere on a drunken spree after high school graduation) in so long, they have to look up the codes before they call it in.

Exactly, Marvin, which, no doubt was the context in which the NRA was viewing things.

Context. Amazing how much it matters!

duh. the storm leveled the town, which means there were guns amongst the debris, it sounds like the police picked up the loose weapons and secured them until their owners could claim them.

This is the opposite of New Orleans, where the police took the guns from the hands of their lawful owners, creating a situation where only the thugs had guns.

I like that. The local law enforcement returning the guns to their owners so they can protect their property.
