General Myers' Dole Lecture

It's nice to know I could have been the Chairman. At least, that's the take-away I got from General Myer's Dole Lecture, delivered last night in Lawrence, Kansas. Aside from the chutzpah and breath-taking arrogance of that comment, what do I mean? General Myers and I share several views on the GWOT and the world in general. He believes our rhetorical stance right after 9/11 cost us more than it gained us. He believes we need to finish what we started in Iraq - but he also believes we have to tell the Iraqi government to put up or...

Outstanding read. As you know, I lurk, coming out only to fire a round of snark or to ask questions.

My question is this: Based on this lecture and the analogy to whack-a-mole, how influential will this lecture be, and will the policy wonks
pay attention? How does a lecture like this
get noticed, analysed and implemented if it is
Important?

You mentioned your visit to your state rep at the federal level. Is this something that begins at the grassroots?

And thanks.

                John,

Don't feel bad. I was photographing the Hannity radio show at a large mall, and the Mark Levin show which follows. A cute little girl went up on the temporary stage to give Mark something -- he's a sucker for kids -- and, not wanting to miss the shot -- I bounded onto the stairs of the stage which then collapsed under me with a helluva racket!

With Jack Benny-like timing, Mark said to his radio audience that I was the noisiest photographer in three states!

I believe that we are in a period in which virtually ALL politics are driven by the ever present eye of television. The numbnutted Congress critters spend every waking moment with the intention of uttering the ten second sound bite that will get them on the tube. And the more partisan or outrageous, the more likely that the idiots that control TV will show it. Instead of debating policy differences and finding an honest and workable compromise, they shout at each other (while constantly checking their polls and focus groups). They aren't interested in what's good for the nation, only in what's good for their political party and themselves.

The 24 hour news cycle must be fed, and that requires massive amounts of "news" which is often manufactured by the "news" organizations. They encourage and incite politicians to attack each other and the opposition positions. They have an endless supply of talking heads who have an opinion (always predictably partisan) on virtually everything. And there's always an inexhaustable supply of Congress critters ready, at the drop of a hat, to jump before a camera and bloviate endlessly.

And, perhaps the most dangerous thing about TV, we seem to only elect those candidates who are Hollywood attractive, and highly facil in the art of the sound bite. It is a shame that there isn't a requirement in the Consititution that politicians have to pass an IQ test, because damn few could do so.
