Did you follow the Royal Navy hostage crisis with as much fascination as I did? As I mentioned earlier, being taken prisoner and what you should try to do when it happens is a very-much-discussed item in the ready room, briefing room and bar. I may be wrong, but I think the chances of American military aviators finding themselves in that situation is somewhat greater than either ground troops or maritime surface warfare personnel. So, it’s hardly surprising that it occupies us airmen personally (“How will I conduct myself?” “How long will it take them to break me?” “What should...

                Rob,

Point taken, except that anything German today has a tendency to push my contempt button (just read Davids Medienkritik).

And I will, of course, never admit that my wife talked me into getting a Peekapoo a few years ago. An animal with French bloodlines...feh. Good alarm dog though.

                Why pick on Schnauzers?

Schnauzer were originally bred to be farm dogs in Germany, to keep the rats and other vermin out of the barn. So maybe an inprovement would be to act as Schnauzer??

When you see an RAF pilot who has clearly had the living puss smacked out of him he gets a free pass. Nothing he says counts.

When see a group of people smiling and waving like they just won a trip to Disneyland and they say they caved because they were "threatened" with being charged in what is an illegal dentention anyway they get NOTHING.

Hell my own side smacked my troop senseless, put 5 guys in hospital and everyone else on LD's in what for us was a surprise E&E exercise that lasted two weeks or more to the point until there was no one left who could still walk.

They didn't get the steam off our shit.

Do the Brits not train for being captured or what?

Dusty - I was thinking many of the same things, but as I'm a civilian, didn't comment. However, I especially was surprised at the admission parts, since that seemed to show a complete cowing.

The interesting thing to me about the recent hostage situation was that Iran used similar tactics as they did back in the 1980s to capture them. The small heavily-armed gunboats using deception to get close to a target was a hallmark of Iranian behavior during the Tanker War.

I have written a book about the U.S. military in the Persian Gulf in the last years of the Iran-Iraq War. Those days should be studied in light of current events.
