I think Naomi Wolf is cracked (and Brian Leiter, and…, and everyone else who puts forth such X Points showing So-and-so Fascist! lists).

They say we’re a fascist country every time we don’t vote for Jimmy Carter(Saviour of the World!).
Sigh. Apparently the only bad-guys left, and fair game to demonize, are fascists so, in efforts to win cheap political points, we always compare political opponents to fascists(be afraid! as they're fascists, donchaknow.).
Boooorrriiiing, and cheap political showmanship that means absolutely jackchit.

Besides, I thought dehumanization was the path of the fascist?

Amazing how all these Big Financial Disbursers have AOL and GMAIL addresses, vice some corporate domain name email. Yanno, suddenly I don't think I'm rich after all. Dangit! -the Armorer

Monty Python's Reid and the Lost War

I think Reid should have stuck to the "it's a civil war" and "there is no military solution". He would have had the American public. The problem is, he said "lost". Then he tried to claim that Petraeus said the war was lost. That was a big mistake. He outright lied. Further, people are willing to let the Iraqis duke out their own civil war, but not willing to lose our war. Which, contrary to Mr. Reid and the rest of the Democrat attempts to paint Iraq as an illegal war, the American populace has never bought it completely (you know, the whole Saddam, Gulf War I, murdering the Shia, shooting at our jet fighters for 11 years thing). Finally, there is a problem with perception. While people are unhappy that our men and women are dying still, it is an unhappy with the idea that we gave the Iraqis freedom and they are squandering it, not that we have had overwhelming casualties and a military so destroyed it can't carry on the fight. I think Reid hit a wall with that last one which is why he is desperately trying to act like he is simply re-stating Petraeus. I think he just gave a right hook to his own cause.

I've been a bit remiss in posting these, but we shouldn't forget our Heroes in the War on Terror. A couple distinguished flying crosses and a Navy cross awarded amongst several.

If I was she who will not be named, I would believe this was an Islamofascist plot to discredit Winnie the Pooh and piglet, too. Right here in Missouri.

Patrick Lasswell on Community Policing in Iraq:

Your first impressions in Iraq are often wrong, as Michael Totten and I discovered once we got a translation of our video. When we saw the apprehension and interrogation of a drive by shooting accomplice on the streets of Kirkuk two weeks ago, some things didn't add up. With the help of some Kurds from around the world, we were able to get an excellent translation that made a lot of things a lot more clear.

Go check it out - while you're there - ya oughta hit his tip jar, too. -the Armorer

Oops. One of the machineguns captured by Sergeant Alvin York today sits in an evidence locker in Massachusetts, the victim of changing laws and the failure of those responsible for the artifact to keep up with those laws. The library where it was stored (not displayed, one would note) wanted to sell it to raise money. As the weapon is not on the National Firearms Register, that's simply not possible under the law. The local ATF suggests destroying an artifact associated with a Medal of Honor exploit. I can forgive the ATF agent for not knowing who Sergeant York is, given the parlous state of history teaching and therefore perhaps not appreciating the artifacts historical significance, but destruction is not the only option.

It simply needs to be deactivated (if it isn't already) and donated to the Smithsonian or other approved museum - and that is well within the power of the ATF to effect and allow - and I have no doubt the Smithsonian, or 82nd Airborne Museum (SGT York was in the 82nd before they were Airborne), or any number of other institutions would be happy to add it to their collections.

A rote response like destruction is simple an officiously callous barbarity inflicted on the cultural heritage of the nation by numbed bureaucrats. I would note, however, the library trustee is wrong, on the issue of ammuntion. I've got cans of belted 8mm sitting in the Holdings of Argghhh! Ammuntion is plenty available, and belts aren't as hard to find as you might expect.

But that really isn't relevant. As an unregistered weapon it has only two options. Being held by the ATF (who may choose to hold on to it or destroy it) or being moved into the holdings of a properly certified museum. Seems like a slam-dunk to me. The USA Today tidbit on it is available here. H/t, Ray B for the link. -the Armorer

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.

Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.

*Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*

The UAVs (oops, can't call 'em UAVs anymore - they're now Unmanned Aerial Systems... some Colonel got his Legion of Merit for that change...), er, um UAS's we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.

I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to. It's also an open trackback, so if (Don Surber uses it this way a lot) someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone".

ry - I read the link to the "10 Steps" and if there weren't people who believe that $hite, it would be a joke (actually, 2 jokes). Joke #1: As you know, I worked for 2 years and 8 months in Iraq getting rid of Sadam’s munitions stockpile. I never saw "Order 17," but I did see the last document Bremmer published concerning contract security (mercenaries, if you like, they don't care what you call them as long as you call them on pay day) and it specifically said the contract security personnel could be detained arrested charged and punished by the Iraqi gov't. That could mean, at the most hanging and at the least, time in a ME jail... not exactly a license for violence. BTW, Spring of last year, Bush and the Congress amended the UCMJ to allow military prosecution of contractors working for the DoD in a combat zone. Joke #2: Naomi left out the 1st thing fascists regimes always do... disarm the populace, funny how she missed that point, huh? One more thing on contract security: Some companies (Blackwater being one of them) seemed to hire a lot of loose cannons. It’s not a coincidence that Blackwater’s name keeps coming up in the news in a negative light. However, most of the companies I dealt with (Cochise being the best example) were very professional and controlled. All of their managers were retired US military (minimum rank, E-7). I never saw any of these people abuse Iraqi civilians and (since I kept track of the ammo and weapons for our project), I am sure that the ones on the project I was on only fired when fired upon and never went on offense (per CENTCOM rules).

Where's a black helicopter when you really need one? LOL

Thanks for the link. It's a good thing the Kurds gave us a translation for free because we didn't think we needed one for this video, and we did. We also couldn't afford getting this one translated. We felt the interviews with Saddam's Political Prisoners was more critical. (awaiting translation) [That's Patrick's subtle way of saying, "Hey! Hit the Tip Jar, Wouldja?" And ya should. -the Armorer]

Hey, I want our guys and gals out of Iraq. I just don't want them to cut and run. I fear we would just be putting off even more violence both there and around the world. I have a nephew (by marriage) in Anbar province right now, he got married to my niece in January when he was back for his mid-deployment leave. I'd like to see him back, safe and sound. My niece is in the guard too, and I sure don't want to see her have to head over there. It is a possibility however and if she has to go over there I would hope conditions have improved by the time she gets there. I've had jobs where starting out it seemed daunting, the job seemed to be endless. Halfway through you look up and see what you've accomplished and what still remains and think you're not getting much done. It isn't until close to the end you look at all you've done and how little is left to do and you realize the goal is near and you feel a little extra energy doing that last bit. I think we're in the middle of the job in Iraq and can't see anything but how much remains to be done. I can't say how much longer we'll be there but I'll support those, in the military, who think we should complete the mission they have taken on. I don't do so uncritically, I just think this country should give wide latitude to those we ask to protect us to do the job we give them.

Hey hey! Looks like I will be in Kat & The Armorer's neighborhood tonight! Probably be in Kansas City tonight, tommorow, and possibly until Sunday. Drop me an E-mail, maybe we'll do 'rita's and talk shop, blogs, and other meaningless points of interest :) [What, you don't have *my* address and an ability to type??? 8^ ) ]

Hey, I want our guys and gals out of Iraq. I just don't want them to cut and run. I fear we would just be putting off even more violence both there and around the world. Of course, this is correct for us. I don't want us to be there either, but I don't want us to leave the job half done. The issue, as I saw it, was in Reid trying to paint it as a defeat. We aren't defeated. People just want the war to stop. In painting it as "lost", I think he cut off the middle people who are just tired of the war and were ready to say it was somebody else's responsibility. I don't think those people agree that this is a "defeat". Even my moron lefty younger brother was a little po'd about "the war is lost". His point was, if needed, we could kill Iraqis and foreign jihadis all day barely breaking a sweat. He just doesn't think we should be doing it for them because he buys into the "let them kill each other until they are tired, but don't let them kill us" crowd.

Personally, my choice for the MG was the National Infantry Museum, but that's probably just because I was just at the School for Wayward Boys last month.

Harry Reid is playing the old game of diverting money from the military for vote getting social programs. The US Treasury only has so much money to spend. Reid wants to divert the Troop’s share into vote getting programs for this upcoming election cycle. Jimmy Carter did the same thing with horrible results. For his diversion of funds to work Reid and his buddies must cripple the on going military campaign. To cripple the war effort Reid publicly stated that the “war is lost.” This statement not only besmirches the Troops but it also pumps up the enemy. Reid has engaged in a very dangerous game of vitriolic budgetary warfare. He is putting our troops at risk of life and limb – all to ensure one political party will continue to control the Congress and the Senate (and possibly the Presidency). Reid and his party’s actions are despicable!

HL - That would work for me, too. I didn't publish a comprehensive list. Museum of the Army too, when they get it built, for that matter.
