Excuse the interrupt and out of sequence post:
Hey, Koreans! Don't take on a sense of collective guilt over this. Don't listen to the jackalopes who are going nutso right now. It wasn't your fault. He's not a reflection of you all anymore than the Unibomber was representative of Caucasians.

There's no need for S. Korea, the Korean-American community, or individual families that just happen to have Korean blood in them to apologize or feel any shame over this. There's no need for you to feel any worse than the rest of us about this. Don't let anybody brow beat you over this. It wasn't your fault. It had absolutely no connection to you in any real sense. His parents were from the 'Hermit Kingdom'. That's the only connection you and this gun spree nutjob had. That's it. That's the same as my connection to Michael Collins because my family is from Ireland---i.e. an absolutely unsubstantial one. Not your fault. Don't feel responsible for it. It isn't about you. It's about him.

Hey jackalopes! Don't be jackholes about it, people. Being Korean or Christian or anything other than him being a sick, sick man had nothing to do with this. Grow up and stop trying to find a group of people to hate. This kind of nonsense angers me. So knock it off already(particularly you, Ms. swsnbn(ss!)). Join the 21st Century would you?

She who shall not be named (she'll sue!) shows that she's damn near insane, if not a full blown bigot, here.

You know what swsnbn(ss!)? Ismail Ax could be a WoW (World of Warcraft for the non-online gaming crowd) handle or on par with writing 'Holden Caufield' on his arms as it this point as nobody knows what it means or why that jackalope wrote it. Not everything that happens is part of a Islamicist/Terrorist plot. Put the remote control down. Pop that '24' dvd out your player. You're getting paranoid, swsnbn(ss!) and making the rest of us look bad.

I think someone better check if swsnbn(ss!) is armed and refer her to some psych counseling regardless.

My, La Schussel is on a tear, isn't she? Complete with all caps shouting and stuff. You can name her, Ry, just don't post pictures of her. That would be bad.

Thinking big. Really big. Really really big.

Then there's...Piggybacking - I'm of the opinion that if you have a wireless network, and you don't secure it from unauthorized users, you're an idiot. Interesting issues raised in this article. I'm of the opinion if you are too lazy to read the very simple instructions that come with a wireless router - and don't at least set up MAC-address level security on your network, you're laying out an invitation. It isn't rocket science. If you literally cannot comprehend the router instructions, then you should either pay someone to do it for you, or skip it and stick with a cable. I'm continually amazed at how many unsecure networks there are when I travel. The three that currently exist in my neighborhood either use encryption or MAC-address level access control.-the Armorer

Building on the "broken clock" theme regarding La Schlussel that Oldloadr and I are jousting about in the comments, comes this - which, in a sense, supports both of us.

First it was Johnny Muhammad, now it was [He Who Shall Not Be Named In This Space] aka Ismail Ax. Precisely how many mass shooters have to turn out to have adopted Muslim names before we get it? Islam has become the tribe of choice of those who hate American society. I'm not talking about people who grew up as Muslims, confident and secure in their faith, good fathers, sons and neighbors. I'm talking about the angry, malignant, narcissist loners who want to reject their community utterly, to throw off their 'slave name' and represent the downtrodden of the earth by shooting their friends and neighbors.

Herein lies the crux, and what Ry was after with his bigotry comment. La Schlussel sees a mosque-driven conspiracy in every olive-skinned bearded face she runs across who is behaving less than properly in her view - and, I suspect, figures the others are just hiding it better. And she can certainly be right, and just as often, or more so, wrong. I see the shooter in the mold from the quote - he was a faddist murderer, adopting a form that is highly visible - lending credence to La Schlussel's attitudes, while not actually being the same thing - but in enables tarring with a wide brush. Just as the lone internet geek paradigm tars with a wide brush.

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.

Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.

*Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*

The UAVs (oops, can't call 'em UAVs anymore - they're now Unmanned Aerial Systems... some Colonel got his Legion of Merit for that change...), er, um UAS's we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.

I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to. It's also an open trackback, so if (Don Surber uses it this way a lot) someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone".

Isn't 'Ax' slang for a gee-tar? And didn't Freud teach us that sometimes a cee-gar is just that? Unless of course, Willie Jeff is using it...

Hey, there's no need to throw "24" under the bus! Thanks for the link Ry, she is scary.

I dunno...taking the Willi Jeff snark as a basis, 'Ismail Ax' can be seen as one of two things: Either Ismail is a mathematical equation, or it is the name of the son Hagar bore Abraham. 'Ax' can refer to the weapon used to stamp out polytheism/apostasy. Next the name of the shooter has a Chinese designation for Muslim. An internet site has publised a guide to fighting alone regarding individual jihad, and last week there was a school that enacted a scenario about what a 'Christian' fundamentalist group would do to take out a school. I am not trying to freak people out here, but the AAJA was very concerned that there not be a rush to judge all Asians by the race/ethnicity of the shooter. Interesting...and so I leave it at that. Mileage, etc.

ry - I checked out the swsnbn(ss!) site and I would like to know what you think is bigoted. If this guy did have a derivative of Ishmael on his arm, it could be significant. In the broader war we are engaged in, maybe not every Muslim is our enemy, but it is, I think, important to be aware of the fact that every enemy is Muslim. I know the individual was South Korean, which would put him in a low probability of being Muslim, but it must be considered that either he did convert, or he knew the symbolism of refereeing to Ishmael would push the buttons he wanted pushed. The eastern culture is all about symbolism. The western culture is as well, but not to the same extent. For example, I believe the perpetual Palestinian protesters get more emotional satisfaction out of burning a flag than I get angry watching them do it, especially when they are too cheap to buy a real flag and make one with a bed-sheet and box of crayons.

There ought to be another rule about not discussing the poster child for paranoia and narcissicism before 10:00 am. It's not healthy.

Oldloadr - you need a broader view of La Schlussel. *Everything* is a muslim terrorist - which means she's bound to have at least the accuracy of a broken clock. It's possible the shooter was absorbing some muslim hate (though from what I've seen of his writings and website, that would be a very new phase for him) but it seems fairly clear now this kid was far more wacko than jihadi. Perhaps analysis of his surfing habits and email will paint a clearer picture, but Ms. Schlussel sees a terrorist under every rock. You also missed the flame war she got into with SWWBO, which is where Ry's name for her comes. Then there's Carrie's characterization of Ms. Schlussel, immortalized in the right sidebar Notable Quotes:
Perhaps we should have another category of conservatives besides paleocons and neocons. "Narcissocons" with the motto "We are always on our minds". If you happen to be one, you are not allowed to have or spend the older quarters because there's a MEXICAN EAGLE on the back. Oh the horror." . . .
Which refers to the event that started SWWBO's War.

GOOD GRIEF! Put a warning up, willya? You stunted one of the CLUs out of a few years' worth of growth. He is pushing six feet, but still... heh.

Wait! What are you trying to say? *I* am always on my mind! Although I am better looking and I admire Frances Townsend, especially after hearing her speak at Tufts.

Correction, she said those crazy things about Julie Myers not Frances Townsend. Mixing up my female administration people.

Mixing up my female administration people. Heh. The myriad possibilities of that set-up have me stunned such that I can't choose one to run with...

female administration people??? Huh. Sounds like a new code term for The Rotation? *grinnnnn*

I couldn't read the burning butt bidet story without immediately turning my thoughts to Taco's bidet story. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.... oh... what a memory!

John - OK, point taken and I didn't know about the feud. However, as you say about the broken clock, I didn't find that post to be bigoted, but something to consider. My biggest concern is the continued rush to not profile when there is a definitive trend... Besides, as I mentioned, it could be that the sicko was using a symbolism he did not personally believe in to push our buttons, which still should be considered and not dismissed as Islamophobic.

Tough crowd here.

Funny... when I hear the name "Ishmael," I immediately think of Melville, not Mohammed. But, then, I'm not a deranged English major (deranged, yes; English major, no).

Eric - I guess you didn't go to Sunday School. All good little Evangelicals (and most other Christians) know the story of Abraham and the child of the flesh (Ishmael), by his maid Hagar and the child of the promise (Isaac) by his wife in her old age, Sarah. According to both Jewish and Islamic genealogies and accepted by most Christian Denominations, Ishmael became the father of the Arabs while Isaac was the father of Jacob, of whom God changed his name to Israel. Knowing these facts can give you a better understanding of the events and interactions in the ME.

Everybody needs to chill out. Ishmael's Ax is a literary reference. Not Muslim, per se, except the name sounding Muslim. The guy was an English major after all. "Ishmael" or "Out of the Depths" (alternate title) mrs. E.D.E.N. Southworth Ishmael was not Muslim. The book is a barely veiled reference to Abraham Lincoln I believe.
Ishmael. Serialized from 1863 to 1864 as "Self-Made; or, Out of the Depths," Southworth's favorite among her novels is the story of a hero, born into poverty and believed to be illegitimate, who gains success based on the author's concept of the masculine ideal of piety, altruism, and sentimentality.
Ishmael is first found to have a problem (anxiety or mental) when he is out chopping wood with his Ax. They realize that something is wrong with Ishmael because he is swinging his ax frantically at the wood and his father or father figure comes out and takes the ax from him. You can read the book here

Kat - Except he used the Arab spelling (Ismael), not the Hebrew one used in said book... I admit the Ax thing goes towards your way of thinking, but then again, if the guy were logical, we wouldn't be talking about him in the past tense... So I vote for the logic in the quote John brought in above, "First it was Johnny Muhammad..." Of course, since he was an English major, he could have combined the 2 in his twisted irony. What do you think?

Maybe he mispelled? i don't know. As soon as I saw that phrase had been written on his arm, I kept thinking it was something I had seen before, not in regards to religion. There are many books that reference an "Ishmael", "Ismael" or "Ismail" and many derivitives of the name. I am more familiar with the spelling "Ismail" as the arabic version of the name, but I don't think it means anything. There is also a poem about cutting wood in a forest that references Ismael's Ax. I think, which ever reference he was making, it was not religious in nature, but that he was literally referring to his arm (the one he was shooting with?) as the "ax" and he was "cutting wood". Ishmael or Ismael seems like a character's name, not a religious reference. I thought it might be the Southworth reference because it was referring to someone with deep depression and many social obstacles that kept him out of "main stream" society. Of course, in the book, as with Lincoln, the character overcame those social issues and married his wealthy wife (Mary Todd?) over the objections of her parents and her friends. Again, I thought that this seemed interesting since this fellow made references to "rich" "spoiled" (?) kids AND he deliberately went and shot the first girl in the dorm, shooting the guy only because he came to see what was happening and shooting no one else in that dorm. Maybe she was well off? Or socially acceptable and he thought everyone was keeping them apart? maybe his story just didn't end as well as the fictional Ishmael? All of that is speculation. The young woman may have just been nice to him once or twice and he got it twisted in his head. Still, the reference to the ax as the instrument that led to determining his illness seems interesting as well as the "cutting" down wood.

John - Liberal Guvs in NJ habitually tell their NJSP chauffers to "step on it" -- doesn't matter whether they're travelling to someplace five miles away or a hundred and five. As for using the light bar, too, welllll, they're spay-shul, ya know? On a related note, Corzine's aide was cited on Monday afternoon as saying he expects to see the Guv hard at work in his office again NLT this coming Monday -- another fine example of the clueless dolts running this place... *sigh* Looks like there's no rush for BCR to double the dosage of my rabies prophylaxis series. All the snarks flying around pretty much tubed my chances of talking Counsellor Schlussel into a lap dance...

Oh..so that's why you needed the rabies prophylaxis. Nice touch. Don't you think you'll need to be scrubbed down after being exposed to atomic waste? Or do you plan to wear an enviro suit? That scene in Naked Gun 33 1/3 comes to mind..

Loadr, John mostly hit at what I was talking about. THis woman sees conspiracies everywhere. Look down a bit on her site. When she thought it was a Chinese student she was wondering, rather implying nefarious, about how accurate a shooter he was. A chinese plot to test our ability to handle a threat. A PRC plot to use terrorism in the US! Gott in Himmel! She sees conspiracies everywhere. Not only that, given the literary uses of Ishmail/Ismail, there's TONS of interpretations possible, not just the Biblical. Considering: a) Kid's S. Korean. If you look at the stats on religious affiliation in the Korean community you'll find Buddhism and Evangelical Chrisitian sects as the most likely. Islam is a remote option. Exceptionally remote. b) Kid's an English major. Symbolism is what he studies. Not just because of ASian/Eastern extraction---which to me, having grown up amoungst more Asian faces than Caucasian ones(I was easy to pick out of a crowd as a kid---just about the only blond in a crowd), seems kind of odd to say. There's nothing inherently more predisposed to 'symbolism' in 'them' than in 'us'. Look at the use of idols and such of the Eastern Orthodox faith. TONS of symbolism. That stemed out of Greece and the Roman empire. That's Western, holmes. Utterly, utterly, Western. c) Going off the reports that the kid had 1) no friends, 2) HL's linked myspace page saying the kid played world of warcraft 3) religiuos converts tend to spend a ton of their time at the religous center or amoungst the faithful there's not much to recommend a religous conversion to anything. d) It takes more than spelling to make one line of reasoning viable. There's typos in The Wife's copy of Moby Dick---there's both Ishmail and Ismail in it. It takes more than that to make a Moslem Jihad conspiracy something seriously considerable. Lots more. Then toss in the rest of her page and thousands of posts where she sees conspiracies everywhere? 1+1=2. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, waddles like a duck, it just may be a duck, right? Gasping conspiritorial whispers. A history of seeing Moslem perfidy in just about everything. Okay, she doesn't waddle like a duck but two out of three means I have to consider the option, right? ;) She displays a George Nori affinity for conspiracy theories, and one of her favorites centers around Moslems. People often consider George Nori to be insane. But I hold out the option she may just be an anti-Moslem bigot instead of simply a tinfoil hat wearer. Look, c) in itself makes me think this guy was something I've run into a lot. The kid with a bloated sense of his place in the world, who's rejected mainstream culture and hates everyone who isn't their disciple, who finds themself being powerful in some heavily restricted and artificial environment(like MMORPGs) but then has their life implode because they cannot reconcile their Godlike status online, that feeds their ego, with their nobody or worse status in Meatworld. People like that have a tendency to nut. Some kill themselves. Some simply cease functioning and have to be comitted. Some snap and attack people. Being a gamer and a geek I'm familiar with the type. This kid had all the hallmarks of that type. And yet she went down the Ismail leads to him being a Jihadist line? Incredible, if not stupid, in my estimation. This doesn't stand up to Occam's Razor, or the Goldberg Sniff Test. Sure, it's something to consider, but the possibility is laughably low. I've got nothing against profiling. It's just profiling makes swsnbn(ss!)'s assesment seem like the rantings of a bigot or an agenda driven loon. Plus, she's picked fights with friends of mine. One thing I am is loyal. That in itself is reason enough for snarkage. I'm with Eric. I hear 'Ismail' I think of 'Call me Ismail'. HAving gone thru CCD run by ruler wielding nuns I still think of that first. Not everythng can be or should be looked at thru the prism of the Bible and religious teachings. Kid's a wacko. Personally, I think Ismail Ax is about like if he'd written Holden Caufield instead. It's a sign of his rejection and hatred for mainstream culture. Given everything else. Maggs, sorry for slamming the Royal TV Program. But I just get the vibe that swsnbn(ss!, and some others I know(but not the Royal Personage), get a strange thrill, a goregasm if you will, off of that show. They need to stop watching their pr0n because it's warping their view of reality. swsnbn(ss!) really gives me that vibe. The vibe that I get from MMORPG players and X-files devotees I know that nutted gave off. Scary. Chief, lap dance? We can find hotter women than swsnbn(ss!) in punditry for that. And isn't the SB BRGD enough for you? Punk. You just want all the womins for yourself, dontcha?

ry - So what do you think of the theory that John added above, "about the angry, malignant, narcissist loners who want to reject their community utterly..."? BTW, I did catch your all's opinion of the Schlussel chick.

Cricket - Got the moon suit and a full-face mask with HEPA III filters and I figure the torso body armor will supplement my internal kevlar insert nicely. Ooops -- gotta get fresh batteries for my dosimeter... ry - Can you think of a funnier way to keep her away from a keyboard?

What do I think of it? I think it's obvious what I think of it. I think it's dead on. PArticularl now that I've Just been watching the video the kid sent to NBC. Totally fits. Reads like a mashup of Holden Caufield and socialist diatribes of 'raping the underclass'. The transformation from victim to hero, from a kid who felt excluded and picked on to farkin' Rambo of the Proletariat. This stuff scares the hell out of me.

How about the Fenimore Cooper explanation?

Looking back at what you were actually refering to: yup, it's totally accurate. You slip dangerous ideas, those relating to violent overthrow of whatever, into anything(religion, politics, whatever) and you'll get this kid or international terrorists. McVeigh. Unibomber. Weather Underground. Symbionese Liberation Army. Just a handful of ideas can pervert anything. Does Islam have things in it that can be easily morphed into calls for violence? Absolutely. Are Islam inspired terrorists a problem? You bet. But it's the sickness in the people that pushes them to the types of violence that terrorism is famous for. Not necessarily narcissism, maybe a sense of nihlism at times. But, yeah, that rather explains it in a general way. That's the mindset of jackalopes who pursue this path. People who can't find a way to muddle thru like the rest of us with our estrangements from what we percieve as 'the herd'. I agree with that. Largely because I know other religions with clearer calls to violence(Hinduism and Sihkism) that don't produce int'l terrorists out to overthrow the US and the int'l economic system. It isn't Islam, it's the radicalism usually summed up in a few dicutms(whether they are in Mao, or Lennin, or anywhere else---maybe even in some of the more bizarre interpretations of Nieztche) that lead to stuff like the modern Islamic terrorist(who's much like the early 1900's Anarchist terrorist). It isn't the Islam. It's the ideas that lead to bigotry, hatred, and bloodlust. Yeah, I agree with that statement. I think it's a fitting description of the general condition.

Just watched this guy's "manifesto". he definitely refers to the colombine killers as "martyrs". He makes several other references to being "rejected" and, in fact, he talks a lot about being "crucified" or being "like Jesus" who was "crucified and humiliated", but came back from the dead and whose martyrdom spurred the spread of a new religion. He talks alot about the rich kids who have things that he apparently did not. He obviously picked the date with a purpose and believed he was following in the footsteps of his idols. He was not an Islamist terrorist. As ry noted, this guy used a lot of symbolic language (confused symbolism jumbled up with his anger and the people he hated). Definitely a product of his education in the humanities and literature. Ismael's Ax is either his game name or is a literary reference as noted above. It was definitely all about his personal feelings of rejection. That isn't something you can quantify or identify to stop. I think the most interesting reaction is the over all, over weening attempts to "figure it out" and "put something in place" to make sure it doesn't happen again. General reaction from the public to something horribly, gigantically tragic. You always imagine that we "could have done something" when the something that was at fault was the rip in this guy's psyche. Nothing we were going to do about that unless you lived in his head with him.

"ry - Can you think of a funnier way to keep her away from a keyboard?" You may just have a point there. Thanks for being willing to take one for the team, Chief.

Awww the Chief is gonna sakkeryficial himself to keep the De'il Woman at bay. (obscure movie reference here) "What a guy!" When he gets back, I will have the showers on the holodeck ready for him after decontam procedures. The ol' 27 might never be the same, but hey, he is willing to risk it. So, a dish of red beans and rice along with some iceburg lettuce wedges drizzled with Green Goddess dressing for our hero. *sniff*

Cricket - Add some andouille sausage to the red beans and rice and I'll prop a crash dummy on the ladderback for Debbie the Debbil to play with instead...

Absolutely for our Sugar Buttons. That is what I LOVE about living in the south. Ingredients for fantastic dishes are easier to obtain. Paul Prudhomme's Andouille is dang decent.
