Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.

*Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*

The ~~UAVs~~ (oops, can't call 'em UAVs anymore - they're now Unmanned Aerial Systems... some Colonel got his Legion of Merit for that change...), er, um UAS's we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.

I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to. It's also an open trackback, so if (Don Surber uses it this way a lot) someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone".

Q. When does the prosecution usually offer a plea bargain? A. When the effort to try someone on the larger charge isn't worth the result -- or when the perp has offered to trade information and the information proves out. Al-Q is capable of coming to the same conclusion. Wonder how large a Muslim prison population Australia has...

DESPITE the attempts of a well-co-ordinated political and media campaign to portray him as an innocent victim of the war on terror, David Hicks's plea of guilty to charges of giving material support to terrorists before a US military commission confirms something that has been obvious for a long time. Namely, that the suburban boy from Adelaide who left his family to join the cause of violent Islamic fundamentalism has not spent the past five years jailed at Guantanamo Bay because of a youthful misadventure, but rather because he committed some very real crimes with very real consequences.

Even this very strong condemnation of this guy still seems to miss the point. Waging war is not necessarily a crime, even when our enemies do it against us. Even if this guy serves time for crimes he committed he should still be incarcerated until such time as Al Qaida stops waging war on us -- not because of any crimes he committed but because he is an enemy combatant in a shooting war. Admittedly that might be a verrrrry long time indeed, since they say they won't stop until America is under Islamic rule, but that isn't our problem.
