Kat’s been having too much fun being first.

Not a link, but a book recommendation. David Drake’s Redliners. Want to understand without a moment’s doubt the difference between Normal and Military? Read that book. Sure it’s only fiction, but it’s fiction like Uris’ Battlecry is.

Yeah, I sympathize with ‘God’ in this book. A lot.

Also may speak to the affair le Arkin.

Why is a ‘Bush is the Debil’ site the first place I’ve seen to run the ppt brief on Iranian involvement? Are we lagging or are security clearances a problem?
---
This is why I believe that while diplomacy needs to be in the toolkit it shouldn’t be thought of as the only useful tool. EU internal doc says Iran nuc program cannot be stopped.

There comes a time when talking has no more value. I hope Barnett is right, that we can treat the Iranians like bigboys and move them away from being a real problem with economic ties (please, God let Barnett be right, please, please, please.). But if this EU report is right then we may have talked ourselves passed the window to do anything else about it since raiding isn’t going to stop the program indefinitely. Not when there’s money to be made off of selling Iran the components to build reactors it won’t.

Has anyone actually seen the numbers on this yet? Are they playing the trim in increase is a cut game or are there real cuts in the budget for VA?

Was Japan hit by heretical Islamic terrorists? ()

Don’t mess with the Japanese. We just got them to stop being a militaristic society. You don’t want them to get angry and go a-conquering. Ask the Chinese and the Koreans about the last time they did that. Really, they’re crazier than the Canadians---and you don’t want them mad at you either. Better yet, just realize you don't want any of us mad at you and call it a life.

JRobb may have a lead on what type of MANPAD are showing up in Iraq and threatening helicopters.

Since David Perlmutter is the source of my invitation to the "Blog to the Chief" event at the Dole Institute tonight, it seems only polite to invite you to David's blog, Policy By Blog. Some lefty student groups are expressing an intent to show up at the event tonight, with the purpose of shouting down the right-wingers on the panel. We'll see. Be fun, regardless. -the Armorer

Looks like the Iranian Police have a security problem. They're losing their expensive Austrian sniper rifles. No worries. US troops are finding and securing them for the Iranian cops. Finding and securing them in... Iraq. H/t, Master Jules, who has found the wabbit. -the Armorer

Update (13 June 07) It would appear the story is *wrong* - at least based on evidence (or, rather, the lack of evidence of the rifles). See Bob Owens at Confederate Yankee for the details. That's the nice thing about a blog - I can go back and update the old post, which will hopefully help Googlers out. -the Armorer

A little love note from Republican Conference:

Best One Minute of the DAY

Congressman Patrick McHenry (North Carolina 10)

Please click here to see the actual floor speech

Mr. McHenry: "After months of campaigning against stay the course, the democrats are proposing just that. A stay the course resolution here on the house floor. Their Iraq resolution does not have the force of law and in fact this nonbinding resolution is simply a mealy-mouthed attempt to appease their democrat leftist base. Democrats have held 52 hearings on Iraq since taking control of congress. Let me get this right. The democrats have held 52 hearings so they can show one resolution on the house floor that has no bearing on the president's policy, does not have the force of law, does not advocate the withdrawal of troops, and does nothing except have a tantrum here on the house floor. So please explain this new direction, madam speaker. This is not a new direction. It's political posturing of the worst kind. Madam speaker, where's your plan? Where's your plan for victory in Iraq? Where's your plan for success and national security? I yield back."

Indeed, what *is* the plan? I understand "withdraw" - but they won't come out and demand it in an accountable fashion. Just sayin'. -the Armorer

They have a plan, but they aren't committed to it right now because there is no dialogue with Iran so they cannot be sure if it is completely feasible or what the Iranian expectations are. They are also hedging their bets for the 2008 election. Some Republicans have been doing the same. Points 5 and 6 I stated on January 24, 2007:

5) If the negotiations at behest of Shia do not work, the Shia dominate the country, the politics, the police and military, thus they may mobilize and brutally put down the Sunni insurgents/Al Qaeda terrorists/Ba'athists (all hopes of the US efforts) in such a way that only Iraqis can do to Iraqis as it is "internal". Hopefully, this does not start until we completely withdraw from the country in order to avoid being tainted. 6) Whether through negotiation or brutal war, Sunni support for Al Qaeda type terrorists and ability to hide/protect camps, travelers, planners, etc would be greatly reduced because the Shia will control Iraq.

Here's a video of "Over the horizon" - Murtha who basically outlines the Democrat position: when we leave, the Shia will sweep Al Qaeda from Iraq. I noted that in the "coming Sunni/shia war" how many of our "Sunni" allies are making noises because they just won't sit down for an Iranian dominated region or OPEC.

It basically puts the tension between the Sunni and Shia, hopefully forcing the "conservative" Sunni factions in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, etc that normally fund these "charities"/ "missionaries"/ "terrorist funding and recruiting" organizations to turn and face the closer enemy. It's way Cold War.

Problem though assumes that the Iranians, who have been helping both AQ and the Shia, will not only turn off arms, but turn on the AQ and not use them to continue to attack our allies in SA, Jordan and Egypt in order to consolidate their power and force additional concessions from them.

Second problem, as I see it, is that the Shia will force AQ from Iraq after a very bloody battle, but AQ and their now extended following of Takfiri Islamists will have to go somewhere and that somewhere will be back into Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Egypt to name a few places. They will do that along with the hundreds of thousands of additional refugees that will go into these countries. For Jordan, unless we have a giant aid package ready to go, that could mean utter collapse of one of our best allies.

The amount of terrorist spawning radicalism that would ensue boggles my mind and makes me extremely leery of this Democrat plan. Largely because, again, it presupposes that all the actors involved, states or non-state terrorists, would react predictably and rationally.

For this possibility, they are willing to let hundreds of thousands of Iraqis die in the ensuing bloodbath, give Iran the Nuke and leave our allies dangling in the wind like so much red meat at the butcher shop.

What does this administration do? At most they present information that shows Iran is supplying both sides of the war effort and killing our men and women while the President tells Iran that we won't attack them. Ever. All this because the Republican fall back plan is the Democrat plan. The only difference is the Republicans are hedging their bets that they can bring Iraq under control before having to go to "plan b" (or "c" or "d" depending on your take).

[I suppose I should have posted this at my own place as an actual post, but I felt the need to answer - essay - on the matter right below your question -kat]

Good stuff, Kat. So, lessee, if I were to condense the plan to a television soundbite it would be... Vietnamese re-education camps, Pol-Pot, and the Pathet Lao redux. So, I guess this *is* Vietnam. Heh. -the Armorer

When isn't there a budget cut for Vets? In the 90's it was the Defense Budget. Everyone wanted a piece of the pie, these days even with a steady increase of veterans...it's the VA. You'd think after the whole laptop incident hullabub and the VA essentially stating "Look, we've barely got enough money to keep the doors open, let alone do some full blown computer security system" that the folks up yonder would pay attention But nope. The Average Memory Life Span of a politician? Until Election Day

The VA numbers are budget chicken at this point. Anything two years out is hot air floating balloons and establishing negotiating positions.

The various laptop/data scandals still amaze me. Why in bloody helk does anyone in a government job (civil or military), I don't care what their job description, need to pull data To Their Laptops? Work should be done on queries against the server, and temporary work stored on secure network locations - NEVER copied to hard drives of user machines that are portable. That's pi$$ poor security, and should never have happened once, much less multiple times. *grrrrr*

I managed to fix that for...uh...a large retail conglomerate in my area Thin Clients. No Floppy disk, no outside Internet access and the all of their data is stored on the servers. Simple, cheap, and will protect the average end user against their most vicious problem: themselves.

Redliners is in the Baen Free Library.

GI Bill Education benefits were just re-adjusted to actual tuition costs and congress is considering taking the funding of GIBillSR (Selected Reserve) from DoD and handing it to the VA. At the same time, the use of hi-tech body armor has had the affect of producing the most living amputees the US has seen since we shot at each other in the 1860s. So, is congress in the process of creating another unfunded mandate? Maybe means testing and user fees?

I misplaced my rifle once in Basic Training. My DS fired a good twenty blank rounds through it before handing it back to me and confining me to base for the rest of my natural life. I counted myself lucky I wasn't charged. Needless to say, my rifle never went unsecured again...ever. I wonder what will happen to the Iranian cops who lost one out of every eight rifles they were sent? /sarcasm

Yup. it is. That's the link that's in Drake's name. The one for the book to own is under the title. Good book imo.

When I was a nineteen your old A1C, I lost a pair of needle nose pliers one foggy night on the Eglin (33 TFW) flightline. Before it was over, I was up over 24 hours searching and researching and researching every jet I worked on before it could be released to fly. I got a very long lecture about how a $5 pair of pliers going down a $500K engine installed in a $7 million jet with 2 souls on board... Anyway, 23 and 1/2 years after that I retired and you can bet I never lost another tool.

Ow! That was a painful, if useful, lesson.

All this because the Republican fall back plan is the Democrat plan. The only difference is the Republicans are hedging their bets that they can bring Iraq under control before having to go to "plan b" (or "c" or "d" depending on your take). Pardon my Phrench, but Jaysus flipping Christ. We can't even keep the Keystone Cops focused on ONE flipping enemy. At the risk of seeming mildly exercised by the topic, what on EARTH makes ANYONE think the support would be there for TAKING ON A SECOND FRONT? AND JUST WHO IN THE HECK WOULD DO THAT? WITH WHAT SUPPORT? Yeah. It would be nice. But our cowardly Congress, who are PERFECTLY HAPPY to see our guys be sitting ducks until 2008 if it gets their butts elected (why ELSE won't they pull them out if they don't believe in this war??? - either fund them and back them to the hilt or pull their butts out but stop the mealy-mouthed, two-faced rhetoric that only helps the enemy and allows our guys to continue to be killed in a cause that they are perfectly willing to support but our Congress undercuts at EVERY TURN - COWARDS THAT THEY ARE). Not that this Marine wife has an opinion. Because if the federal government wanted me to have an opinion I'm sure they'd have issued me one long ago.

And just so I am crystal clear on this point, no I do not either support pulling out, or think there is a snowball's chance in Hades Congress would pull our guys out. Because that would require the ability to make a decision and face the consequences, which also would imply they still possessed gonads, the one thing they have conclusively proven they long ago gave up.

For this possibility, they are willing to let hundreds of thousands of Iraqis die in the ensuing bloodbath, give Iran the Nuke and leave our allies dangling in the wind like so much red meat at the butcher shop. What *else* is new? Congress has a forty-year history of being the largest collection of inept, solipsistic, hubris-ridden wussburgers on the planet.

> forty-year history of being the largest collection of inept, solipsistic, hubris-ridden wussburgers on the planet. Ever since Johnson left, huh? 'Cause he wasn't an inept wussburger... You realize of course, the problem is technology. And for once, I am NOT being funny. The founders knew that 'factionalism' would cause problems, as would congress being too close to the whimsy of the public, too much in the public eye. The system is designed to retard factionalism (one reason for the electoral college, and beleive it or not that system STILL works--more another time on why, for anyone who cares to hear it), but what the founders never epxected was the 24/7 fishbowl that congressional folks live in today, that make them consider much more than they should what the people back home are seeing. We all piss and moan about congress worrying about the constituency unless we're the constituency, then we damn straight want them to be paying attention to us. and we want to know how they vote on every issue, and we want term limits, and we want sunshine laws, and... What we want is to ahve our cake and eat it too. Plain and simple. We Americans do not want congressmen to vote their consciences, or to be bipartisan, or to dicker, wheedle, parley, compromise, or otherwise do anything that doesn't fit with OUR notions and agendas. That's why moderates are so rare these days--they don't satisfy the vocal a$$hats who have nothing better to do that pester the crap out of them everytime one of them even thinks about maybe giving a little to get a little. And I am talking about both parties... Fact is, the best thing that could happen to this country would be to rip those damn CSPAN cameras out of the congress, and to insist that some stuff be allowed to happen behind closed doors... I wouldn't care if we had ugly--SMART congressman (which disqualifies Teddy on one count anyway), but with cameras and whatnot being everywhere all the tme, people just can't even think outloud anymore without be deluged with crap from the people. It used to be that States were where people spent most of their energy because state reps were who could be got at most easily, but now the people go straight to the feds for everything, and give them no time to build consensus, to compromise, or to strong arm deals the way Johnson did for the Equal Rights Amendment. In fact, I'd bet he couldn't get it done in the current congress. Not because the people would be unwilling, but because given the times, if all of us had been able to watch the vote and contact the Senator in real-time, you can BET many of them would NOT have given in to Johnson. This may sound disjointed but here's an example. I wrote this about Wilson a week ago. He was considered a failure as a President for a number of reasons (and was, no question), but I felt he might not have been today. Here's what I wrote: ----- What is most interesting is that Wilson might actually have been more successful today than he was in his day. Not because his ideas were too advanced for his time (they weren't, really), but because his style, personality, demeanor, and character were more suited to two specific features of today's political landscape than they were to his day. Specifically: 1) Mass media would almost certainly have served his purposes, given his good looks, charisma, speaking style etc. It would have made him look good to the public, and given him the public's ear in ways that Reagan understood best of all our recent presidents (even Bill Clinton didn't really understand the people he served as well as Reagan did). 2) Congressional folks are much more subject to the scrutiny and intrusion of their constituencies today than they were in Wilson's day, and so end-runs around Congress are much more effective than in the past; moreover, because today's Congress can be seen by all citizens all the time, the senators and representatives are actually playing to a much larger audience than they used to have to deal with. Essentially, any person anywhere can have an immediate and important influence on the actions of anyone in Congress, which makes a public appeal by a president even more effective. ----- And that's about it. Congress is what we have made it. If we want folks w/ chutzpah running things, we need to pull the blinds some and let them do politics in private sometimes. I know that bucks a dangerous trend, but it's just not possible to have the cake and eat it too. No matter how much we try. And don't even get me started about the de-da-dees who think term limits are a good idea. V/R
