Muffy! Drop the remote, get off the couch and tell Jake to crank up the drumroll CD -- we've got a coupl'a Whatziss Whiners Winners. Jake! That's *not* a frisbee! Wipe it off and stick it in the boombox -- oh, yuck. Where'd you get the maple syrup, anyway? So much for presentation... Anyway, something interesting's cropped up. The Museum guys labeled this 57mm jobbie an M1A1. Yup, the US copy of the Brit gun. Chris figgered it out, but John and Sanger both went deeper and spotted something else. That caster wheel on the trail means it's an M2...

                Will Putnam

Thanks for the gun def. I hadn't got to looking at sov stuff, not sure I would have... As for the Museum, I'd love to go, but I don't think I'll be near Jersey anytime soon, except to fly over it in March going from Boston to D.C.

Who knows, though. I need a Philly trip just to rejuvenate (and remind myself why I don't want to live there again), so it could happen....

Anyway, thanks

Can't find my pencil- Bell P-39 Airacobra, much beloved by Soviet pilots for it's 37mm cannon. U.S. airmen thought little of them but the VVS put 'em to good use.

SangerM: The quad-mount behind the jeep is an old Soviet AA gun mount (DShk, I think), 12.7mm, which I believe was captured in one of the Iraq wars. There's some battle damage on it, which you can't see in the photo, but it's largely intact. Very cool piece, but entirely non-functional.

Also, if you really want to stop by, the facility is host to a musuem that's open on thursday and saturday (IIRC).

If it was standard equipment at basic... it must be a shoe horn or sumthin'.
But seriously, the arm flips over and "locks" on top of the other end, forming a sideways "D". Looks like it's some sort of locking device that's missing the padlock.

                bell hueycobra D-uh...

'an I wanna know what that big honking gun is with the tractor-look tires.

Also, is that a quad-MG42 AA gun in the corner behind the jeep? I can't find any reference to that, and they really don't look like MG-42s, but I can place the thing. Looks like a german mobile pedestal though, it's hard to see...

Hey, John - the one behind the 57mm has got the high-speed carriage mod, too. BTW, I did some de-painting on the second M1902. It's an M1905, barrel was made in 1907 by Bell Steel. No wonder they diversified into aircraft manufacture*...

Mailbag lock - it is threaded through the eyelets at the top of the bag, folded over itself and a padlock locked on to hold the moveable arm in place. The loop then forms a useful handle! Might even have one here somewhere as the Scouts used to have them for locking goody-bags shut.
