The A-10C.

A newly modified A-10C Thunderbolt II taxis in during the roll-out ceremony Nov. 29 at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz. The A-10 has been modified with precision engagement technology to create the new and improved A-10C. I work for GE Aviation and I�m a retired AF MSgt (F-15 Avionics). We would love to deliver updated higher thrust engines to the A-10 community. Only one problem is AF Senior leadership (or lack thereof). These are the same guys who sacrificed the Weasel, EF-11 and I can�t even count the upgrades to the F-15, F-16 and other airframes all in the name of the Raptor. Can you actually imagine the sortie availability of this A/C in PACAF assigned units if we do fight the Chinese? Oh wait I forgot, this is the silver bullet that will sweep the sky�s of thousands of Flankers, Mig �29�s and upgraded F-7�

Now all we need are new engines. The ability to sustain energy (airspeed) while sustaining moderate-to-high-g turns would be nice, not to mention good for morale in a surviving-an-engagement sense. Instapilot

Wait a minute, lemme see if I got this right. * All the airframes are twenty years old or more. * The original design is thirty years old or more. * Everyone who's ever seen one agrees it's the ugliest thing ever built with wings. It has all the aesthetic appeal of a flying brick. * Before Desert Storm, the consensus in the AF was that flying one was a career-ender because it was a mud-mover, not a fighter. * Ten years ago it was scheduled for retirement because They Who Decide in the Five-Sided Asylum decided they didn't need it. * Last I heard all of the remaining ones were being transferred to ANG units. But today the brass is spending several million per plane for new weapons and avionics upgrades to it, enough to warrant an entire new sub-model designation. Way to go, Warthog!
