Go for it. It's out there, in the usual places.

Oh, and the bullet is the correct bullet - the neck of the cartridge was damaged by the numbskull who used pliers to remove the bullet... and the color on the tip of the bullet *is* a clue.

Without something to compare it's size to like a '06 it is difficult to accurately judge, but it looks very much like an old round called a 5.6 Vom Hofe Express. However that was not a military round and you usually do Mil. stuff, Hmmmmmmmm?

Jeez. The closest thing I can find is a 7.92X94. And I'm guessing that's not a US round. Oh well. But I liked MajMike's guess, even though not serious, or correct.

Hmmm.... Bullet looks to be around .223 which would make the cartridge about .50. No idea of what the round is other than meant to leave the weapon at a very high rate of speed and make a very noticable impact at the far end. Color being a clue probable means armor piercing so I'm guessing it's an odd little anti-tank round. It would also shoot flat for quite a long ways so anti-aircraft is a possibility. Proxy here at 'work' (well, they do pay me to be here) blocks things it thinks are 'weapons' related (mostly) so it's hard to do any research. I'll have to check back and see if I'm putting people on the right track or not.

It's a sighter round for a coaxial sighting rifle.

Have to agree with df644, after going through many of the references in my library (does this make me an intellectual?) his id seems most correct. Was this ever developed experimentally for military use?

either a subcaliber for a short tank range or a spotter round for something like an 106mm RR, which in fact also used to have a subcaliber round for the main tube (but I think that might have been a .22). Yeah, I got to fiddle with the 106mm w/the 25th. I was the backblast bagger (you know the guy who attached the burlap bag over the breach to contain the tell-tail backblast....) The hard part was loading all the bags on teh 5 ton after the exercise; And just for the conversation, any of you remember the USMC Ontos? Death on tracks (for the crew too, I suspect), but I would have hated to be on the front side of one... V/R :-)

It's an Iranian round, the 2.56X99 Anti-Jew Sniper round in Depleted Polonium (which they got from Putin's boyz, who said they were SURE it was depleted). President I'm a Jaded Armpit ordered a special sniper rifle to be built for shooting Jews at very long range, all the way across the Arabian Peninsula, which is as close as the Iranians themselves will ever get to Israel. Note the fine armory work with PRC cheapo tools evident on the neck of the round, which came from Iran's premier Arsenal, The Lake of Bitches. You should be able to see the "LB" headstamp if you look closely, but if not, it was a mere oversight on the part of the arsenal, no biggie. A biggie for them would be leaving out the powder, which happens every time the powder-measurer is called to prayers and leaves the machine running. We'll have to fight them and the products of their Arsenals someday. I'm worried, very, very worried.
