In this post about the deaths of Specialist Babineau, and Privates Menchaca and Tucker, I made the following observation: Lastly, this result needs to inform the Courts Martial of those soldiers whose actions seemingly sparked this event, if that connection can be made with evidentiary rigor. Not in the guilt or innocence phase - but in the punishment phase. If that connection can be made with evidentiary rigor... Heh. 'No Evidence' Ties Dead Soldiers to Mahmudiyah Crimes American Forces Press Service | September 05, 2006 Washington D.C. - Citing media reports suggesting a possible connection between three U.S. soldiers killed...

What perturbs me about it is that 'we' will do the right thing and investigate. The sad part about this is all someone has to do is point a finger and accuse. Facts don't matter. The
scary part we have to be seen showing that we back what we say about being a democracy. We're damned if we do and damned if we don't.

Since the other three were killed out of revenge,
I would be inclined to flatten the village.

I've always maintained that using the rape/murder case was a convenient excuse for killing our boys. If they had killed them for participating in any crimes against Iraqi's, they would have made it VERY clear from the get-go. Using the rape/murder excuse was just that- an easy excuse.

An important lesson in how accusation is NOT proof and suspicion should be veiwed with skepticism until sufficient real evidence is presented.

This lesson should be applied universally, but unfortunately it will be forgotten yet again in the heat of political idiocies.
