"It's iron; looks like the end of one of your long-handled grenades, but I don't know which one." Aha! It's an end-view of a studded potato masher! You can use it as a trench maul, and then use it as a grenade! The dent on the edge is from a British helmet.

Either some sort of discus grenade (don't think so) or more likely the base of a later 19thC shell with five studs to engage the rifling. But if so, I have no explanation for the notch at lower left. Show us scale or tell us the diameter John.
