Either some sort of discus grenade (don't think so) or more likely the base of a later 19thC shell with five studs to engage the rifling. But if so, I have no explanation for the notch at lower left. Show us scale or tell us the diameter John.

A cookie from 1962 that you just found last week while cleaning out the attic? If so, it looks like you tried a bite. Is it still good? :-)

In fact it's got six studs.

14-pounder James rifle?

Its a valve of some sort? Probably from a big machines bowels.

The front end of a Minie ball after smacking into John Kerry's forehead?

Base end of a Rifled-Muzzle-Loader AP shot. Palliser? Oh, I see OD thought alike. Great mind, there.

I don't think there is a noth, just a shadow. a really old land mine? some kind of artillery seal.

The head of a trench mace? I'm still lurking here brother.

A tamborine from Easter Island?

Are you going to give us another pic, John? Or a hint? We're getting nowhere fast. Have you forgotten this thread? We demand answers.

Actually, I'm letting the Monday readers catch up... and it's fun watching you guys twist slowly in the wind...

A cap on some sort of artillery piece?

It's iron; looks like the end of one of your long-handled grenades, but I don't know which one. Although, it could be Munchkinland manhole cover....

I wonder how big it is. I also note that the studs seem less corroded than the face presented to us.

"It's iron; looks like the end of one of your long-handled grenades, but I don't know which one." Aha! It's an end-view of a studded potato masher! You can use it as a trench maul, and then use it as a grenade! The dent on the edge is from a British helmet.
