Air raid drills were part of everyday life, especially for us Milbrats in the 50's and 60's. We were taught to "duck and cover" under our desks and were herded into school basements and hallway for periodic air raid drills. It wasn't just milbrats, dear. Even exclusive Catholic Girls schools had us ducking under our desks and filing down to the 'tunnel' so we would be prepared.

I remember those desks!! Awesome protection from nuclear events!! Are you going to share? :)

Nuh-uh! My desk! Get yer own!

Now I know what the tunnels at skool were for.

It was fashionable among some to sneer at the "duck and cover" propaganda, presuming that the whole surface of the planet would be entirely involved in the fireballs. If yer far enough away, d&c would get you off unscathed vs. scorched, and sliced up by window glass, as some schoolkids in Hiroshima didn't know until too late.
