Selective Memory

Dave the Tomb Robber (which is what his wife calls him when he clambers too far up his Professor of Archaeology pedestal) tells me the following quote from John Stuart Mill--liberally-laced with *tsk*-ing pontification on the "illegal war to impose our values on others" trail that we're treading--is enjoying a renewed popularity with the Brie and Chablis Set up the road:

The only freedom which deserves the name is that of pursuing our own good in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it. Each is the guardian of his own health, whether bodily, or mental or spiritual. Mankind are greater gainers by suffering each other to live as seems good to themselves, than by compelling each to live as seems good to the rest.

They apparently forgot that JSM also said:

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

No pontification necessary. Kinda restores your faith in philosophy without having to wipe runny cheese off your chin...

The "selective memory", along with the cherry-picking of news reports and other data, is a characteristic that is not limited to either the left or the right. So, where does that leave us? Think about it... but be sure that you do not succumb to your own confirmation bias if you wish to not hoist yourself with your own petard.

...but be sure that you do not succumb to your own confirmation bias if you wish to not hoist yourself with your own petard. Excellent advice, Jack. In plainer language-- "Be sure you're right. Then, go ahead." --Davy Crockett

Jack's Back! Obtuse as ever, but he's back. 8^ ) Ry - you've got cover now!

Great quotes, Bill! I find it funny that the 'Brie and Chablis' set use the first at all - they obviously don't understand it. It's all about personal responsibility - and there is nothing in the first to clash with the second. JSM was consistent, it's the other crowd who is not.

Barb - Exactly! I was reading the first and thinking "How does that square with their other policies?" The answer is....it doesn't.

Brab 'n' Mags - When have you ever expected consistency (or logic) from that set?

Ahhh, Chief.......you've got me there.

Ummmm--got you *where*, exactly? Does it have anything to do with flashing?

"Ry - you've got cover now!" (Stops banging head on piano) Wha'?

Chief...........coming to Washington for the Milbloggers Shootout?

Unfortunately, the only Shootout I'll be entering any time in the foreseeable future will be between me (plus the airport manager plus the FBO manager plus a bunch of pilots) and the county Planning Board (plus the Town Council plus an eeevil Condo Constructor). *Somebody* took a payoff to rezone 28 acres of green space next to the airport and now said eeevil Condo Constructor is planning to erect 750 town houses. For various reasons (safety being just one fly in the ointment), us'ns are ag'in it and I got stuck with being the loudmouth--uhhhhh--expert witness...

Heh. And said Condo Constructor will then encourage residents (who had *no idea* that airports were so noisy and *dangerous* to pressure to close the airport, for the children, of course, so he can get that land and build on it, too. May his loins wither and shrivel.

"who had *no idea* that airports were so noisy and *dangerous* to pressure to close the airport, for the children, of course, so he can get that land and build on it, too." I thought you lived in Kansas, John. What're you doing talking about El Toro and John Wayne Airport from Kansas? Bastiches. I used to love going to El Toro in the summer. Kick his arse Cheif. Then maybe you can go after the guy who built a golf course behind my Mom's place?
