Midway.

Sinking Sun Griffith Baily Coale #28 Oil on canvas, 1942 88-188-AB A Marine stands at parade rest on the bow of a PT boat as she moves slowly out to sea from Midway to give decent burial to Japanese fliers shot down on the islands during the battle. The red ball of the rising sun is prophetically repeated by the round disc and spreading rays of the sinking sun.<br />

Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Midway. I haven't found any of the Usual Suspects with posts, so I'll have to handle it myself.

Some sailors finally woke up, I see. Late sleepers on a Sunday. As is proper, they did a more thorough job.

Why the turning point? The Japanese could not replace their carriers nor their aircrews. Read More

Time to remember. By all thought, the US should have been destroyed at sea. We had one hand to play, one very good hand, and we had to play it just right. Man, did we ever. Stop by Argghhh!!! and Ace Pilots for just the right stuff. Read More

I was hoping to do a little piece on June 6 regarding the Battle of Fox Green beach. Might need to drop you an E-mail to pick your devious brain, sir :)

P-cola .... good idea for next week's Fullbore Friday. And be nice. You know it is the BlogSabbath, but thanks for covering for the rest of our slackness.

No excuses, 'Phibian. My Tuesday post is already done...

I think Herman Wouk did it best, in "War and Remembrance"; He dedicated a separate page in the book to each of the TORPRONs, with a black border around the names of those who didn't come back. (Which was dang' near all of 'em!)

mmmmmmm Navy stuff! Good job Armorer! Spent the day at Dad's and got most of this blow-by-blow. Still fun to come back here and read your stuff. You have to cut Lex a break....time zones and all. I look forward to Tuesday.

Oh, I think I recall reading someplace, that Admiral Dan (while he was still active duty) invited Herman Wouk to visit his command, and was careful to provide Kosher vittles for Mr. Wouk, as one would do for someone he liked. Wouk put up with the ordinary Gentile food when he was a USN officer, as a matter of necesssity. Reputedly, he converted some anti-semites in his ship to philo-semites, just from his earnestness about prayers and phylacteries. Towards the end of his service, I think he had a problem with shooing away the gentile sailors, they wishing to touch his phylacteries for good luck.
