            <description>I wrote this post *before* I heard the news about the Canadian Gunner dying in an infantry firefight. It&apos;s been a while since an artilleryman has died at the hands of another artilleryman. I have a buddy from the old days, recently selected for Brigadier General. Back in the day, while sitting in our Hummers, watching the Toad fumble his way down the Central Corridor to die on the obstacles of the OPFOR out by The Alligator at the NTC, we talked of the future. I mean, did that beat up their rotating bands, or just get them all dirty and rusty, or had they been stacked there like that for so long that they&apos;d all plastically flowed into oval shapes, or what?

After I landed to drop off some souvenirs for 'em(yeah, we got the gun. With an OV-10), I looked around for their ammo storage area. All the beeg boolets--Willie Petes included--were stacked neat as cordwood. Lying on their sides. The rounds must've looked like uncoiling Slinkys when they left the tube...   ]]>
